Our ancestors saved Rome

Krylov I.A.
Krylov I.A.

Phraseologism: Our ancestors saved Rome.

Meaning: About people who themselves have done nothing worthy, but boast of the merits of their ancestors.

Origin: From the fable "Geese" (1811) by I. A. Krylov (1769-1844). The geese, which "the peasant drove into the city with a long twig," began to complain to a passer-by that the peasant was chasing them like a simple bird, although he should treat them with respect: "... We descend our noble family from those Geese, // To whom Rome once owed salvation ... "The fable refers to the ancient legend about how geese, who heard the approach of strangers one night, woke up the sleeping guards of the Capitol - a fortress in the center of Rome with their cackle. The advance detachment of the Gauls, who tried to secretly climb the city wall to open the fortress gates, was defeated - the assault was thwarted, and Rome was not taken.

Random phraseology:

Man is born free.

The words with which the French writer and educator Jean Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) begins his treatise "On the Social Contract" (1762): "Man is born free, but meanwhile he is everywhere in chains" (book 1, ch. 1). The original source of this expression is the statement of the ancient Roman lawyer Domitius Ulpian (170-228): "by natural law, all people are born free."

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. Created artificial blood 27.07.2012

Around 96 million blood transfusions are performed worldwide each year. Blood is an eternal deficit in medicine. Thirty years ago, Japanese, American and Soviet scientists tested a blood substitute based on fluorinated hydrocarbons, but it turned out to be fraught with dangerous side effects. French biologists from the Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris) have learned how to grow red blood cells in the laboratory from bone marrow stem cells that produce blood.

So far, only 10 billion red blood cells have been made (this number corresponds to two milliliters of blood, and two trillion cells are needed for a transfusion). A suspension of erythrocytes, administered to a volunteer who gave his bone marrow for experiments, behaved normally in the blood.

Now the French intend to achieve mass production of red blood cells. This may take 5-10 years. If we take the bone marrow of a person with a zero blood type as a basis, such blood is suitable for transfusion to anyone, regardless of their blood type.
