The efficiency of graphene panels is increased

08.06.2012

Physicists from the University of Florida have set a new efficiency record for graphene solar cells. This achievement allows us to consider graphene solar panels as a promising source of clean electricity.

Graphene solar panels are very attractive due to their low price and exceptional durability. However, all previous attempts to use a single-atom carbon lattice in solar panels were not crowned with particular success - the efficiency of converting sunlight into electricity did not exceed 2,9%. This is too small for the commercial use of graphene in solar energy.

American scientists for the first time managed to achieve a record efficiency rate of 8,6% thanks to the "doping" in the form of additive trifluoromethanesulfonylamide (TFSA). The impurity increases the conductivity of graphene and, accordingly, increases the efficiency of converting sunlight into electricity. Unlike other admixtures that have been tried in the past, TFSA is stable and ensures a long life for a new solar panel.

So far, prototype solar cells made of graphene are small and are small 5-mm silicon plates coated with a monolayer of graphene. Graphene and silicon form the so-called Schottky transition (one-way electron motion), which, when illuminated by light, acts as an energy conversion zone in any solar cell. Typically, a Schottky junction is formed by adding a layer of metal to the top of a semiconductor. However, the researchers found that the metal can be replaced with transparent graphene, which is much more promising in terms of increasing the efficiency of solar panels.

Scientists believe that in the near future they will be able to increase the efficiency of graphene solar panels up to 10%. This is already enough to promote the novelty to the commercial market. The new panels will be really cheap to mass-produce, and instead of silicon, a flexible polymer substrate can be used, which will expand the scope of solar panels.

The existence of an entropy rule for quantum entanglement has been proven 09.05.2024

Quantum mechanics continues to amaze us with its mysterious phenomena and unexpected discoveries. Recently, Bartosz Regula from the RIKEN Center for Quantum Computing and Ludovico Lamy from the University of Amsterdam presented a new discovery that concerns quantum entanglement and its relation to entropy. Quantum entanglement plays an important role in modern quantum information science and technology. However, the complexity of its structure makes understanding and managing it challenging. Regulus and Lamy's discovery shows that quantum entanglement follows an entropy rule similar to that for classical systems. This discovery opens new perspectives in the field of quantum information science and technology, deepening our understanding of quantum entanglement and its connection to thermodynamics. The results of the study indicate the possibility of reversibility of entanglement transformations, which could greatly simplify their use in various quantum technologies. Opening a new rule ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Biohybrid fish from human heart cells 17.02.2022

Researchers at Harvard University and Emory University (USA) have developed the first fully autonomous biohybrid fish from heart muscle cells derived from human stem cells. Artificial fish swims, recreating the muscle contractions of the heart, according to the press service of the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. John A. Paulson.

The first self-contained biohybrid device is made from cardiomyocytes (heart muscle cells) derived from human stem cells. It mimics the shape and movements of the zebrafish. Unlike previous devices - a biohybrid jellyfish and an artificial ray made from rat heart cells - the biohybrid zebrafish has two layers of muscle cells, one on each side of the tail fin. When one side is compressed, the other is stretched. In response to the stretch, a protein channel opens, causing a contraction that triggers the stretch, and so on. A closed cycle is created, thanks to which the fish can move for more than 100 days.

The researchers have also developed a self-contained pacing unit, similar to a pacemaker, that controls the rate and rhythm of these spontaneous contractions. Together, the two layers of muscle and the autonomous stimulation node allowed for continuous, spontaneous and coordinated forward and backward movements of the fins.

Biohybrid fish only get better with age. The amplitude of muscle contractions, maximum swimming speed and muscle coordination increased during the first month as cardiomyocyte cells matured. Eventually, biohybrid fish achieved the same swimming speed and efficiency as zebrafish in the wild.

The development brings researchers closer to creating a more sophisticated artificial muscle pump and provides a model for studying heart conditions such as arrhythmia.
