In the absence of any kind of "bells and whistles", this welder allows you to reliably connect sheet steel up to 3 mm thick. True, there is still one mode of operation, the most necessary for most DIYers - spot welding.

Current adjustment is not provided. The welding progress is determined by the heating time (that is, the passage of current) and is controlled either visually (by color) or using a time relay, the exposure range of which is 0,5-5 s.

A serial OSM-1,0 with a power of 1 kVA is used as the base transformer. It is desirable to leave the primary winding with him without any changes (although, if necessary, you can rewind: after all, there are only 200 turns of PEV2-1.9). But it is better to replace the secondary one with a more "productive" one, performed by the PVZ-50 wire - two three-turn parts connected in parallel so that their total cross section is 100 mm2.

I recommend making electrode holders from duralumin, textolite washers insulated from cheeks, and from M8 mounting bolts - with varnished cloth or protective cotton-based adhesive tape. I advise you to use copper electrodes with a diameter of 12 mm, fixing them in holders with a rectangular brass washer and two M6 screws, for which the appropriate thread is prudently made in special steel inserts.

In the initial position, the holders with electrodes are separated by a spring with suitable dimensions (for example, from an old folding bed). But it is necessary to make sure that the spring does not create a short circuit at the terminals of the secondary winding during the operation of the welding transformer. One of the quite acceptable technical solutions is, in particular, the variant with the use of a separating plastic sleeve fixed at the end of the fixed electrode holder with an M6 screw. The lower end of the spring is electrically isolated from all other parts of the "welder" in any, even the most incredible situations.

Scheme of connecting the device to a household power supply

It is advisable to connect the welding machine to the network according to the well-established electrical circuit diagram (see Fig.) through an automatic 20-ampere switch. The electric meter must also be designed for the same (at least!) current. Well, the direct control of the "welder" is with the help of a magnetic starter K1, switched on by a pedal with a button S2 of the "mushroom" type. The case and the secondary winding of the transformer must be grounded.

It is necessary to turn on and off such a "welder" only with compressed electrodes. Failure to comply with this simple rule threatens to cause intense sparking, which leads to burning of the electrodes with extremely undesirable consequences.

And one more advice verified by practice. Since forced cooling is not provided for either the transformer or the conductors and electrodes, the temperature regime should be constantly monitored during welding. As necessary, take breaks in work, but in no case allow the equipment to overheat.

Solidification of bulk substances 30.04.2024

There are quite a few mysteries in the world of science, and one of them is the strange behavior of bulk materials. They may behave like a solid but suddenly turn into a flowing liquid. This phenomenon has attracted the attention of many researchers, and we may finally be getting closer to solving this mystery. Imagine sand in an hourglass. It usually flows freely, but in some cases its particles begin to get stuck, turning from a liquid to a solid. This transition has important implications for many areas, from drug production to construction. Researchers from the USA have attempted to describe this phenomenon and come closer to understanding it. In the study, the scientists conducted simulations in the laboratory using data from bags of polystyrene beads. They found that the vibrations within these sets had specific frequencies, meaning that only certain types of vibrations could travel through the material. Received ... >>

Implanted brain stimulator 30.04.2024

In recent years, scientific research in the field of neurotechnology has made enormous progress, opening new horizons for the treatment of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. One of the significant achievements was the creation of the smallest implanted brain stimulator, presented by a laboratory at Rice University. Called Digitally Programmable Over-brain Therapeutic (DOT), this innovative device promises to revolutionize treatments by providing more autonomy and accessibility to patients. The implant, developed in collaboration with Motif Neurotech and clinicians, introduces an innovative approach to brain stimulation. It is powered through an external transmitter using magnetoelectric power transfer, eliminating the need for wires and large batteries typical of existing technologies. This makes the procedure less invasive and provides more opportunities to improve patients' quality of life. In addition to its use in treatment, resist ... >>

The perception of time depends on what one is looking at 29.04.2024

Research in the field of the psychology of time continues to surprise us with its results. Recent discoveries by scientists from George Mason University (USA) turned out to be quite remarkable: they discovered that what we look at can greatly influence our sense of time. During the experiment, 52 participants took a series of tests, estimating the duration of viewing various images. The results were surprising: the size and detail of the images had a significant impact on the perception of time. Larger, less cluttered scenes created the illusion of time slowing down, while smaller, busier images gave the feeling of time speeding up. Researchers suggest that visual clutter or detail overload can make it difficult to perceive the world around us, which in turn can lead to faster perception of time. Thus, it was shown that our perception of time is closely related to what we look at. Larger and smaller ... >>

Satellite communications in the 300 GHz band 08.02.2017

Panasonic, together with colleagues from the University of Hiroshima and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, have achieved some success in developing a transmitter capable of transmitting data at over 100 Gbps over a single channel in the 300 GHz band. The emergence of this technology, at least an order of magnitude faster than the 5G network, is expected around 2020.

Last year, this group of researchers showed the use of QAM modulation in the radio channel in the 300 GHz band. This year, the speed per channel was increased six times - up to 105 Gbps. Scientists intend to continue development.

The allocation of the currently unused 275-450 GHz frequency band, which includes the 290-315 GHz band in which the transmitter operates, will be discussed at the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) in 2019.
