Why doesn't the igloo melt from the inside?

Although stone and wooden houses have become widespread among the Eskimos, nevertheless, this northern people still build an igloo on some special occasions or during transitions. The igloo builds quickly and can withstand any weather.

A hole 1,5 meters long and 50 centimeters deep breaks out in a fresh snowdrift. Then, starting from the front wall of the pit, snow blocks are cut with a knife. They are shaped so that they lean inward when placed on edge. A circle of these blocks is laid out, and then its upper part is cut off in such a way that during construction, subsequent blocks follow a tapering spiral. Material in the course of work is cut out inside the house. The last block, whose upper edges are wider than the lower ones, covers the hole at the top. After that, all the cracks are covered with soft snow.

A small igloo can be built in a couple of hours. When the house is built, a woman takes over. She lights a cat-oil lamp, trying to keep it as hot as possible. Then she closes the entrance with a snow block and seals the needle tightly. Now the snow is starting to melt. But, since the roof of the house has a rounded shape, the water does not drip, but is gradually absorbed into the blocks, and they are almost completely saturated.

When the blocks are sufficiently saturated with water, she extinguishes the lamp and opens the door. Icy air rushes in, and after a short time, the fragile snow house becomes an ice dome! Now it is so strong that the roof can even support a polar bear and not fall through. And now it will not melt, and you can comfortably sit in it.

But of course, when the winter ends and the temperature rises, the igloo starts to melt, and usually the roof collapses first.

Why did the asteroid Aten get its name?

Discovered on January 7, 1976, the tiny asteroid Aten (about 800 meters across) is named after the ancient Egyptian sun god because its entire orbit lies inside the earth's orbit.

The maximum distance of the Aten from the Sun is 0,966 astronomical units, or the average distance of the Earth from the Sun.

Two more similar asteroids are known: Ra-Shalom and Hathor. The maximum removal of the first of them from the Sun does not exceed 0,832 astronomical units, the second - 0,844 astronomical units.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

ASUS RT-AC3200 3200 Mbps Router 06.06.2014

ASUS introduced the ASUS RT-AC3200 router with support for data transfer with a total speed of up to 3200 Mbps. The Broadcom 802.11ac Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) technology with six spatial streams used in the device allows you to provide Internet access in a multi-user environment at maximum speed.

SmartConnect technology allows the device to increase Wi-Fi performance by up to 200% by automatically selecting the ideal band for network clients based on their location and needs. And thanks to the support of AI Radar technology, the router automatically adjusts the radiation pattern of its antennas depending on the characteristics of the surrounding environment, emulating a directional signal.

According to the company, Ai Radar technology shapes the signal in such a way as to guarantee maximum radiated power for the client: a weak omnidirectional signal is transformed into a stronger, more directional one, while improving channel throughput.

The ability to operate the device in two frequency bands of 2,4 and 5 GHz at the same time allows you to optimize performance for multi-tasking at the same time, such as surfing the Internet and streaming HD content.

The ASUSWRT interface provides simple and reliable network management with the ability to set up in as little as 30 seconds.
AiProtection, developed in partnership with Trend Micro, provides protection against external attacks and maintains complete confidentiality of work.

The ASUS RT-AC3200 router is equipped with six external antennas, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports, as well as four RJ45 connectors for connecting local computers on the LAN network and one WAN port (RJ45 connector).
