For connecting knives and forks to handles many different formulations are recommended. The easiest way to attach is as follows: all the holes in the handle are filled with rosin powder and, after heating the metal rod of the knife or fork, insert it into the hole; the rosin powder melting at the same time, having cooled down, hardens and quite firmly holds the knife or fork in the handle.

But with such a fastening, knives and forks cannot be washed in hot water. In this regard, the following compositions give more satisfactory results: prepare a mixture of 1 weight part of wax with 3 parts of rosin and, having filled the hole in the handle with this mixture, insert knives and forks. In the same way, the following compositions are used in a hot molten state: to 2 parts by weight of molten shellac, 1 part of tempered chalk is mixed, or 8 parts of rosin, 2 parts of wax and 4 parts of crocus are fused together.

Especially for metal pens, the following composition is recommended: 3 parts of sulfur are alloyed in 5 parts of rosin and 1 part of ceresin (mineral wax). When the mixture melts into a homogeneous mass, add to it, stirring well, 2 parts of a brick, crushed into a fine powder. Holes are filled with this hot mass and knives and forks are inserted. With the help of this composition, knives and forks are held very firmly in the handles.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Atomic transistor 26.09.2005

British physicists have made a transistor controlled by a single atom.

A transistor is an electronic device with three pins. Two of them are included in the electric current transmission network, and a control signal is applied to the third, which either allows the current to flow between the first two, or prohibits it.

As physicists from the University of Liverpool, led by Professor Werner Hofer, have shown, such a device can be built from a molecule and a single atom.

To do this, a layer of hydrogen atoms was applied to the surface of a silicon wafer, and it became an insulator. Then styrene molecules were placed on it, which lined up in lines up to hundreds of nanometers long. Next, hydrogen was pulled from one of the silicon atoms located next to such a line, and an electric charge formed on it. After that, it only remained to attach two probes of an atomic force microscope to the ends of the molecule and pass a current between them.

It turned out that by varying the charge on silicon, it is possible to change the current strength tenfold.
