In recent years, quite a lot of control devices for various electrical installations have been described in amateur radio literature. In most cases, they are built on the basis of a microcontroller, most often - PIC16F84, due to its relatively low price and a large amount of literature on this topic. However, if it is necessary to develop such a device, say, for a home Christmas tree, a radio amateur needs to learn the microcontroller assembler, purchase (or assemble) a programmer, and spend a lot of time and effort debugging the program.

A much simpler option seems to be using a personal computer for control, even the simplest one. Today, many radio amateurs have such computers, and it remains only to make an actuator. Since it is not always possible to open the system unit of a computer, in order to install such a device in it, you will also have to assemble a power source (or use a ready-made one manufactured by the industry). However, this disadvantage is compensated by the flexibility in repurposing the executive device for various tasks and the convenience of the system in terms of programming - well-known high-level languages or assembler for the IBM PC are used.

Schematic diagram of an eight-channel actuator is shown in the figure. As you can see, it is made on the DD1 register and is connected to the parallel port of the PC.

The register is used in an unusual way, but works fine. Optothyristors TO-125-12,5-10 installed on heat sinks were used as power elements. LEDs HL1-HL8 indicate the operation of the channels. The power supply contains a step-down transformer T1, a rectifier VD1, a microcircuit stabilizer DA1 and filter capacitors C1-C3.

As examples of the use of such a device in table. Figures 1 and 2 show the "Running Fire" and "Random Selection" control programs, using which you can check the device's performance and write others.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Key Optical Transistor Technology 19.07.2013

Scientists and engineers from the Technical University of Vienna were able to control the polarization of a terahertz light beam, which is the basis for creating promising optical microcircuits.

Scientists have managed to change the polarization of a light beam (the direction of light oscillations) using a special material and an electric current. This laboratory technique has the potential to be scaled up and applied to industrial production, paving the way for the mass production of high-speed electronics that are controlled by light rather than electric current. In addition, the control of terahertz radiation can be useful not only for the production of optical computers, but also, for example, for the manufacture of scanners and medical devices.

Light can oscillate in different directions, that is, have different polarizations. This phenomenon has long been known and widely used, for example, in 3D television. Scientists from Austria for the first time managed to control the polarization of light at the micro level. An electric field applied to an ultrathin layer of telluride, mercury, allows you to arbitrarily change the polarization of light. In this case, terahertz light radiation was used, that is, the optical chip can operate at a much higher frequency than current processors with their 3-5 GHz.

One of the advantages of the Austrian invention is the very low power consumption. To change the polarization of terahertz light radiation using an electric field, a voltage of less than 1 V is required.

Thus, scientists and engineers from the Technical University of Vienna have created a technology that could revolutionize the electronics industry. Of course, modern production technologies and the principles of electronics are very firmly rooted, but let's hope that the advantages of optical transistors will eventually outweigh all the costs of reforming production.
