If you pick up a pack of Canadian cigarettes, you will immediately want to quit smoking. In the fight against smoking, Canada is ahead of the rest. For several years now, exactly half of the area of cigarette packages has been decorated with pictures borrowed from the life of smokers: the lungs of a cancer patient, brains mutilated by a stroke, a heart affected by a heart attack. On some Canadian cigarettes, you can see the following warning: Each year, as many people die from smoking as live in one small town. And in support of this, the following chart is given: 510 people die from murder in Canada every year, 1.9 thousand from alcohol, 2.9 thousand from car accidents, 3.9 thousand from suicide, and 45 thousand from smoking.

The authorities of the German city of Lohr claim that this particular settlement is the historical homeland of the famous Snow White, about whom the Grimm brothers wrote a fairy tale. And Snow White herself was a real woman who lived in the XNUMXth century.

Scientists from the Bavarian town of Lohr seriously believe that Maria Sophia von Erthal, born in 1729, is the prototype of Snow White. According to surviving documents, Maria was the daughter of a landowner, and she lived in the family castle, which is now the Snow White Museum. And the prototypes of the gnomes were mine workers who mined copper and silver in the nearby town of Bieber. The miners of those times often wore brightly colored hats that protected them from falling rocks. The Times

The first emblem of the city of St. Petersburg appeared in 1712 on the red banners of the St. Petersburg regiments. According to the drawing and description given in the book by A.V. Viskovatova Historical description of clothing and weapons of the Russian troops (St. Petersburg, 1841), it was a golden flaming heart, under a golden crown and a silver princely mantle and under them two palm branches. At the end of the twenties of the XVIII century, a new coat of arms of St. Petersburg was drawn up - a scepter and two crossed anchors. Herald master Francis Santi, invited to this position by Peter I, is considered its creator. The scepter indicated that the city was the capital of the Russian Empire, and the anchors characterized it as a sea and river port. The meaning of the emblem of the coat of arms of the city of Shlisselburg - the key over the fortress - is associated with its name: Shlisselburg in German means the key-city. This name was given to the city by Peter I immediately after its capture by Russian troops on October 11, 1702. Prior to that, since 1611, it was called Noteburg - a nut-city, from the ancient Russian name of this fortress, founded in 1323 - Oreshek. Such a coat of arms first appeared near the city in 1730. Prior to that, since 1712, Shlisselburg had a different emblem - a column decorated with anchors and crowned with the prows of ships - rostra (rostral column). The British Ministry of Health officially states: if a healthy man in his prime drinks a glass of red wine every day, the risk of cardiovascular disease is reduced by 30-70%. The amount of alcohol recommended by British doctors is 21 units per week. A pint (0,57 liter) of dark beer is 2 units - so count it. However, the more you drink, the more your body demands, as it over-produces enzymes to process the increased amount of alcohol, a vicious cycle ensues. Men's Fitness February 2002

Of the entire order of animals, birds have the most complex vision, and their visual analyzer is two orders of magnitude sharper than ours, the human one. So, for example, the eyes of eagles, condors and vultures, looking out for prey on the surface of the earth from a great flight altitude, have an amazing morphophysiological structure of the retina. They have a common field of view, like a person, which displays reality on a scale of 1: 1, but in the central beam of the field of view, everything perceived is increased by 2,5 times, i.e. the optical system of the eyes of feathered predators is double! An eagle from a height of flight sees the smallest details on the ground, like a telephoto camera lens.

Scientists have found that all birds, without exception, have well-developed color vision due to the presence of living bubble lenses in the retina. These droplets of transparent fat work as magnifying lenses. So, for example, in sea tern gulls, fatty lenses in the eyes are filled with red pigment. It turned out that the red light filters are an anti-fog device. This species of gulls is perfectly oriented in haze and fog; they have, as it were, an infrared thermal imager that helps to search for food. .A.Andreev, L.N.Khromov Learn to be Attentive (magazine.km.ru)

Using paper napkins in a restaurant to decorate a table is bad manners: they must be linen. Usually made from pure cotton or linen. Mixed materials with artificial fibers are also used. However, professional waiters prefer white cotton napkins because they look smart and hold their shape well.

As for the sizes, there are certain standards. They exist mainly for square napkins, since the others - triangular and rectangular - are used less frequently.

If breakfast or tea is planned in the restaurant, then there should be napkins with a side of 32 centimeters on the table. When it comes to dinner, they can be large - 40-60 centimeters. European restaurateurs like to fold complex shapes from white square cotton napkins with a side of 50 centimeters. In domestic restaurants with a long history, white samples of Soviet production with a side of 46 centimeters and an openwork edge or 35x50 centimeters (colored) are in use. Retail store equipment. Types of phobias from 400 to 500. Conventionally, they can be divided into Nosophobia, Spatial phobias, Social phobias, Others. Here are some of them:

Nosophobia (obsessive fear of disease with severe consequences):

Cardiophobia - fear of heart disease;

Carcinophobia - fear of cancer;

AIDS phobia - fear of getting AIDS;

Lyssophobia is the fear of contracting rabies.

Spatial:

Claustrophobia - fear of closed spaces;

Agoraphobia - fear of open spaces;

Kenophobia - fear of empty spaces;

Gefirophobia - fear of walking on a bridge;

Amaxophobia is the fear of wheeled vehicles.

Social phobias:

Lalophobia - fear of public speaking;

Anthropophobia - fear of communicating with people;

Gynecophobia - fear of communicating with women;

Ereitophobia - fear of blushing;

Sitophobia - fear of choking;

Mixephobia is the fear of failing in intimacy.

Other:

Arachnophobia - fear of spiders;

Ailorophobia - fear of cats;

Ophidiophobia - fear of snakes;

Taphophobia is the fear of being buried alive.

In general, phobias are a kind of psychological phenomenon of obsession. Obsessions are otherwise called obsessions. Phobias differ from all other varieties of obsessions (for example, endless double-checks: whether the gas is turned off, whether the doors of the house are closed) by the fear of a special power and the impossibility of overcoming it on one's own. At the same time, a person is clearly aware of the absurdity of his fear and is critical of it himself. Therefore, some people try their best to hide it. The famous French agronomist Antoine Parmentier, being a prisoner in Germany, ate potatoes. Returning to his homeland, he set out to introduce it in the French fields. However, for a long time he could not convince anyone - compatriots did not recognize potatoes. Then Parmentier went to the trick. In 1787, he obtained permission from the king to plant potatoes on land known for its poor fertility. At his request, the field was guarded by an armed detachment of royal soldiers in full dress. But only during the day, and at night the guards were removed. And then the people, attracted by the forbidden fruit, began to dig up potatoes at night and plant them in their gardens. And this was achieved by a cunning agronomist. People's History (peoples.ru/ )

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Diesel smoke harms the heart and blood vessels 05.02.2020

Dirty air is harmful to health - this is evidenced by medical statistics: those who breathe air with a large amount of industrial and automobile pollution are more likely to suffer from various diseases, including Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers from the National University of Kapodistrias of Athens equipped a special room in which it was possible to control the composition of the air, and filled it with air with combustion products of diesel fuel - in the amount that can be found in the center of a densely populated city (burned diesel accounts for about 50% of all pollution urban air). For comparison, the same room was filled with clean air. The participants in the experiment, forty people without any cardiovascular problems, were divided into two parts: one two hours they breathed smoky air, the other - clean air. A month later, both of them returned to the laboratory, but now they changed roles: those who used to breathe clean air now breathed diesel exhaust, and vice versa.

The state of the heart and blood vessels was assessed by a number of parameters: the activity of protein C was measured, which works as an anticoagulant in the blood, reducing the likelihood of blood clots; the activity of C-reactive protein, one of the main markers of inflammation, was measured; blood vessels were measured to what extent they can expand under the influence of increasing blood flow, how elastic or rigid their wall is, etc. It turned out that even two hours in a diesel atmosphere is enough for cardiovascular parameters to change, and not for the better side.

In those who breathed dirty air, the activity of the inflammatory protein increased (smoking participants in the experiment had more of it than non-smokers). The activity of the fibrinogen protein, which is necessary for blood clotting, also increased; at the same time, the activity of the anticoagulant protein decreased - from which we can conclude that the likelihood of blood clots increased in the vessels. Deviations in the heart rhythm appeared, and the walls of the vessels became less flexible - which, in turn, should affect the blood supply to the organs and the work of the heart. What is especially important, all these changes lasted for a day, although people breathed dirty air for only two hours. But many of us spend in the city center not two hours or three, but more.
