pearl essence, or rather fish scale essence obtained from the scales of various silvery-white fish. Obtaining such an essence comes down to separating a thin silvery surface layer from the scales. For the preparation of pearl essence, it is best to use bleak scales, and in its absence, whitefish scales.

Naturally, fresh scales produce a brilliant essence of the highest quality, however, in production, especially located far from large rivers, obtaining fresh scales is completely impossible. At the very beginning of the origin of this production, the scales of only some varieties of fish were used, such as bleak, beluga, white salmon, roach, sabrefish, herring, etc.

Further observations showed that the scales of any fish with shiny, shimmering scales can be used. In addition, it must be borne in mind that for the purpose of preservation, the scales contain a certain amount of urotropin, which sometimes has a harmful effect on the pearl essence, therefore, scales should be taken either without urotropin or with its lowest content. To eliminate the harmful effects of urotropin, the scales are washed with water, to which a small amount of hydrochloric acid is added, after which the scales are washed with clean water.

The silvery substance of the scales is an accumulation of small crystals with a silvery sheen. These crystals have a very complex protein composition; they dissolve in ammonia and acetic acid. The preparation of pearl essence is reduced to the selection of these crystals in the purest possible form.

Usually pearl essence is prepared in water. If the essence is used in a mixture with gelatin, then the water essence directly goes into action. If celluloid varnish is used to prepare the stalemate, then the essence must be freed from water. Do it like this:

After a long settling, water is drained from the silvery precipitate and alcohol is added. Next, mix and allow to settle again, after which alcohol is drained from the precipitate. By repeating this procedure several times, you can completely remove the water. Below are some recipes for preparing pearl essence.

scales silvery fish, like: bleaks, white fish, roach, beluga and others, are placed in a rotating barrel and doused with salicylic acid solution. Salicylic acid solution is prepared by dissolving 3 liters of salicylic acid in 1 liter of water. The barrel is brought into rotation, and the silvery cover is erased from the scales. After some time of calm settling, the liquid is allowed to drain into a large bottle, and the remaining scaly mass is triturated and treated with salicylic water, as indicated above. The treatment with salicylic water is repeated until the drained water no longer contains a silvery substance. Next, collect all the liquids together in one bottle and allow the silvery mass to settle.

The settled water is drained and pure water is poured with the addition of a small amount of salicylic water. The mixture is shaken, the mass is allowed to settle again, the settled water is drained off and thus this operation is repeated 10-12 times to thoroughly wash the silvery mass. After draining the last washing water, 40 ° alcohol (vodka) is added to the settled mass. The essence is stored in bottles with ground stoppers. In order to prevent the fish scale pearl essence prepared in this way from rotting, you can add a very small amount (a drop, two) of ammonia to it. However, it should be borne in mind that ammonia impairs the brilliance of the essence and therefore, if it is possible to store the essence in clean and dry bottles filled to the top with a well-ground stopper in a dry, cool room, then it is better to do without the use of ammonia.

The scales are removed from the fish (bleak, whitefish, beluga), carefully monitoring the integrity of the easily removable silvery layer of scales. Then the scales are placed in a wide faience, porcelain, stone or ceramic dish, clean water is poured and the scales are allowed to soak for an hour, and they are handled carefully with their hands, since they cannot be rubbed strongly. This treatment aims to free the scales from dirt and animal mucus. Then the water is drained and clean is poured, repeating this operation until the scales are completely washed from dirt. After that, they begin to remove the silvery layer from the scales.

The ottirka is made in the same dish with the help of a mallet made of hard wood (oak, birch, etc.). After a 15-minute scrubbing, the scales are filtered through a cloth or sieve, and only the scales remain on the cloth; the silvery substance goes away together with water into a bucket placed below. The scales remaining on the fabric are washed with water to remove adhering particles of a silvery substance. It is usually sufficient to repeat this work twice to completely separate the silvery substance from the scales.

The filtered water containing the silvery substance is allowed to settle, and after settling for 24 hours, the precipitate is placed in a bottle, filled with clean water, shaken, the mass is allowed to settle, the water is drained, and finally distilled water is added. To protect against decay, as in the first case, add a few drops of ammonia. If during storage the settling liquid becomes cloudy, it must be drained and new distilled water should be poured. Under this condition, the essence prepared in this way can be stored for several months, bearing in mind what was said above about the harmful effect of an excess of ammonia on the brilliance of the essence.

On another way Pearl essence is obtained by using not only fish scales as raw materials, but also fish skin and fish bladder. To separate the silvery substance from the main organic mass, the raw materials are treated at a temperature of 50 °C with a neutral aqueous soap solution. For the same purpose, instead of soap, you can use saponin, enzymes, pancreatin, diastase and others. The pearly silvery substance is separated by repeated washing.

Purification of Raw Pearl Essence

From 4 to 10 liters of raw essence are mixed with 30% saponin, 10 liters of distilled water are added, heated at 20-60 ° C in a water bath and mixed thoroughly. Next, add more water and leave to settle. After 2-4 hours, the residue that does not contain crystals is removed, and the liquid containing pure crystals in suspension is left to settle. After rinsing, the pearl essence has excellent fishing line and purity. Instead of saponin, you can take 100-200 g of sound soap.

Artificial eyelashes controlled by magnet and light 07.06.2020

Researchers from North Carolina State University and Elon University (USA) have created artificial cilia, or hair-like structures, that can change shape in response to a magnetic field and then return to their original shape when exposed to an appropriate light source. The development will find application in soft robotics, according to the press service of the University of North Carolina.

Artificial eyelashes are made of thermoplastic polyurethane, in which microparticles of magnetic iron are "sewn up". The most important thing about these structures is that they have shape memory, that is, any shape that the cilia takes can be fixed and then “removed” with the help of light to get a new one.

The cilia are actuated by a magnet, but they are not pulled towards the magnet, but rotate and align with the magnetic field from the permanent magnet. In the researchers' previous work, the magnet also powers soft robots, but it pulls the robot along with it - and thereby powers the robot. The new approach offers another tool for the development of soft robots.

The scientists have also developed a theoretical model that allows users to predict how shape memory magnetic cilia will react when actuated. In addition, the model explains why, in a particular case, the cilia react in this way and not otherwise.
