Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Link between hunger and mood revealed 03.10.2018

Researchers at the University of Guelph have shown that the sudden drop in glucose we experience when we're hungry can affect our mood.

“We found evidence that changes in glucose levels can have a lasting effect on mood,” said psychology professor Francesco Leri. “I was skeptical when people told me that they become grumpy if they don’t eat, but now I believe it.” "Hypoglycemia is a strong physiological and psychological stress."

The scientists studied the effect of a sudden drop in glucose on emotional behavior by causing hypoglycemia in rats.

"When people think about bad mood and stress, they are talking about psychological rather than metabolic factors," said MSc Thomas Horman, who led the study. "But we found that bad eating behavior can have an impact on mood."

The rats were injected with a glucose metabolism blocker, causing them to experience hypoglycemia, and then placed in a specific chamber. Then several rats were injected with water and placed in another chamber. When given the choice of which chamber to enter, the rats actively avoided the chamber where they experienced hypoglycemia.

"The avoidance behavior in this case is an expression of stress and anxiety," Lehri said. "Animals avoid this ward because they had a negative experience and they don't want to experience it anymore."

The researchers performed a blood test on rats after the onset of hypoglycemia and found elevated corticosterone, which is indicative of physiological stress. In addition, rats treated with a glucose metabolism blocker became lethargic and lifeless.

"You could argue that they need glucose to get their muscles to work," Lehri said. "But when we gave them conventional antidepressants, the sluggish behavior disappeared. behavior changed."

This finding supports the idea that the animals experienced stress and depressed mood in the hypoglycemic state.
