Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The cost of OLED TVs affects consumer activity 05.01.2012

While LG Electronics is set to showcase its 55-inch OLED TV (as Samsung Electronics does its similar products) at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 10-13, market acceptance of such high-end devices will be, according to Taiwanese industry sources, entirely dependent on cost.

DisplaySearch estimates that the new 55-inch OLED TVs will hit the market in the third quarter of 2012 for about $8000, before dropping to $2013 by the end of 4000, thanks to rising sales volumes and new ways to make these products cheaper. However, due to the high manufacturing cost of OLED TVs, annual shipments of OLED TVs from major players in the TV market will only reach 500 or less.

What matters, sources say, will be what technologies LG and Samsung will use to produce the OLED TV. It is pointed out that if LG continues to manufacture such products using the white light OLED technology it acquired earlier from Eastman Kodak, the power consumption and picture quality of its OLED TVs will remain a big problem.
