Nickel plating of iron and steel. Simple recipes and tips Directory / Factory technology at home - simple recipes For nickel plating of iron and steel, in addition to the galvanic method, you can also use the following, very simple method for coating polished steel or iron with a thin but very durable layer of nickel. A 10% solution of pure zinc chloride is taken and gradually added to a solution of nickel sulphate until the liquid turns bright green, then it is slowly heated to a boil, preferably in a porcelain vessel. The turbidity that may arise at the same time has no effect on nickel plating, which is carried out as follows: when the aforementioned liquid is brought to a boil, the object to be nickel plating is lowered into it, and the latter must first be thoroughly cleaned and degreased. The object is boiled in solution for about an hour, adding distilled water from time to time as it evaporates. If, during boiling, it is noticed that the color of the liquid has become slightly green instead of bright green, then nickel sulfate is added little by little until the original color is obtained. After the indicated time has elapsed, the object is removed from the solution, washed in water, in which a small amount of chalk is dissolved, and dried thoroughly. Polished iron or steel plated with nickel in this way holds this coating very firmly. For nickel plating, the following bath is used. A 10% solution of zinc chloride is prepared and so much nickel sulphate is added to it so that the solution takes on a clear green color. Nickel plating is carried out in porcelain or enamelware when heated to a boil. Cleaned objects are introduced into the solution (ignore the resulting turbidity) and make sure that they do not touch each other. After 0,5-1 hour, a thin layer of nickel is obtained. In large industries, nickel plating is carried out as follows. 10 liters of concentrated zinc chloride solution and 10-20 liters of water are poured into a purified (shiny) copper vat. Heat to boiling and add pure hydrochloric acid until the precipitate formed by diluting the zinc chloride dissolves. Then a pinch of zinc powder is added, as a result of which, after a few minutes, the walls of the vat will be covered with a layer of zinc. Nickel sulphate is then added to the vat until a clear green color is obtained. Items are immersed to the bottom with zinc scraps so that they are in contact with zinc in many places. When boiling for 15 minutes, objects are covered with a layer of nickel. If this does not happen, add more zinc or a nickel salt solution. If turbidity appears during the boiling process, hydrochloric acid should be added dropwise until the turbidity dissolves. Excess acid should also be avoided! Excess acid can be removed with a soda solution. When nickel plating, due attention must be paid to the pre-cleaning of items. For nickel plating of copper, the part is cleaned and polished. Degrease in solution. Aqueous solution for degreasing copper and copper alloys (in grams per liter): trisodium phosphate - 100; liquid glass-10-20, Degreasing in a solution at room temperature lasts 40-60 minutes. When the solution is heated to 75-85 °C, the process accelerates significantly. A 10% solution of zinc chloride ("soldering acid") is poured into enameled dishes and nickel sulfate is added to it until the solution becomes a deep green color. The resulting solution is heated to a boil and the part is lowered into it. The part should be in the boiling solution for 1-2 hours, then it is transferred to chalk water (50-75 g of chalk per liter of water) and lightly wiped with a rag. Next, the part is washed and wiped dry with a rag. For repeated use, the solution can be stored for 6 months. in a tightly sealed container. Chemical nickel plating of aluminum almost does not differ from chemical nickel plating of steel, except that aluminum pickling is carried out by immersing the part for 2-3 minutes in a 50% nitric acid solution.
