TOURIST ADVICE
Preparation of products and their packaging. Travel Tips Proper food preparation and packaging before the expedition allows you to protect them from damage, in addition, with proper packaging of products, they are completely, without loss, used in the campaign, which is not unimportant because no need to carry extra weight. Before the trip, all products must be sorted out, put in bags or special containers. Most products need waterproof packaging. They must be decomposed into bags of 1-2 kg. Firstly, it is easier to put them in a backpack, kayaks and get it out of there. And secondly, with small packing of products, each tourist or crew of a raft or kayak can have a supply of food, and therefore, in case of loss of part of the products (loss of a backpack, accident with a kayak or raft), the group still has a certain supply of various products. In order not to waste time looking for the right products, inscriptions must be made on the bags. The bags are sewn from fabric, a slightly larger polyethylene bag is placed inside them so that it does not experience breaking load. The outer cloth bag protects the inner polyethylene bag from accidental damage. In mountain, skiing, hiking trips, it is usually enough to have one large but durable waterproof liner in the backpack - then the products can be put in the backpack simply in cloth bags. For kayaking trips, it is better to pack products in specially sewn strong waterproof bags with a diameter of up to 250 mm and a length of up to 800 mm. Such bags are easy to place in the bow and stern of the kayak or along the sides. Bakery products. Bread should be taken for the first 3-5 days, as a large supply of fresh bread is difficult to carry and does not store well (especially in conditions of high humidity). Only in winter, frozen bread is stored for a long time and, when thawed, restores its properties. However, on long winter trips, the mass of the backpack is crucial, which is why bread on such trips is replaced by crackers. In other cases, a supply of flour is taken, from which tourists themselves bake bread or cakes. Breadcrumbs bought in the store must be dried before the trip. Self-made crackers should be packed in compact packs for single use. Flour does not require mandatory waterproof packaging: when it enters the water, the bag is covered from the inside with a thin layer of dough, the rest of the flour remains dry. Before going out of the flour, you can make a primitive seasoning for soups: fry the flour for 5 minutes in oil with finely chopped onion until yellow. Such a "concentrate" is very popular among Siberian hunters due to the fact that it is stored for a long time. Meat and fish products. Canned food should be taken in tins, preferably made of aluminum alloy. since glass jars are heavy, less durable, and sometimes downright dangerous. It is recommended to inspect tin cans first to see if they have swelling, the so-called bombing, which may be associated with the accumulation of gases as a result of the vital activity of harmful microorganisms. Such canned food, especially meat and fish, is dangerous to health. You cannot purchase unsterilized canned fish (preserves) for the trip, on which there is an inscription: "The product is not subject to long-term storage." Half-smoked sausage at normal air temperature is preserved for a long time, however, so that the surface of the sausage does not mold, it is necessary to grease it with fat. In no case should you take unstable boiled sausages on a hike. Salted smoked fish in order to protect it from "rusting" should be placed in plastic bags and soldered with a hot iron or soldering iron. Butter and dairy products. Butter deteriorates quickly, so it must be melted, packed in metal cans and sealed. Vegetable oil is conveniently transported in a small 2-liter polyethylene canister designed for storing food (non-technical) products. Powdered milk or cream is transferred from cans (especially cans with iron lids and cardboard walls) into plastic bags, which are placed in cloth bags. Cereals and pasta. Rice and millet should be washed and dried before the hike, and buckwheat should be fried and sifted. From pasta, it is recommended to take horns on a trip, as pasta and vermicelli crumble easily when carried. Both cereals and horns are packed in bags. Sugar and confectionery. Sugar is desirable to take in the form of sand. It is easy to carry, does not tear the package. Sugar should be stored in waterproof packaging. Sawed sugar is preferred on a ski trip, because it is accepted there on the way. Sweets are packed in metal cans. Tea, coffee, cocoa are best taken in metal boxes, and the boxes must first be dried, and then pour the contents into them without paper packaging - in this case, much more will fit. Cardboard boxes of coffee or cocoa are not suitable for a long trip. Metal boxes are sealed along the seam with adhesive tape or adhesive transparent tape, after removing the paper sticker, otherwise all waterproofing will be useless. Other products. Salt, like sugar, requires water-resistant packaging. Even in waterproof bags, the salt gets wet quickly and its mass increases dramatically when the bag is opened in the morning and in the evening during the dew. If 8% starch is added to the salt, it will become slightly less wet. It is good to store tomato sauce in polyethylene flasks - when you press on the flask, the tomato is squeezed out of it. When pouring sauce into a flask, you must try to fill it to the very top, otherwise mold will appear. Mustard can be taken in tubes, but you need to put them in a place in the backpack where they would not be crushed. Vitamins are best transferred to a metal box. Citric acid must be placed in a plastic waterproof box (packaging for perfume creams, packaged developers or filmstrips). It is impossible to place citric acid in metal cans, as the acid reacts. Soda is stored in a waterproof bag. Yeast must be dry and stored in waterproof packaging. Ground pepper should be poured into a metal box and sealed with adhesive tape. If you go on a water trip, then you need to pay special attention to the issues of protecting products from moisture and take a supply of adhesive tape and adhesive tape with you.
