In open space distance to the visible horizon depends on the height of the observation point above the earth's surface. If you are on a flat steppe plain and the observation height is about 2 m, the distance from you to the horizon is about 5-6 km. If you are sitting in a boat and the height is about 1 m, the horizon is 3.5-4 km away from you.

The higher the observation point, the farther the horizon moves away from you. So being on top of the lighthouse 20 meters high, you can see the surface of the sea for 17 km. If, while sailing in a boat, you see the light of this lighthouse above the horizon, then you can add this distance to the distance from you to the horizon and get the distance to the lighthouse, about 22 km.

For a perfectly round Earth, calculating the distance to the horizon is not difficult. In nautical astronomical yearbooks, tables of horizon removal are published for different heights of the observer's eye position above the sea surface. If you do not have such tables, then remember that, as a rough approximation, the distance to the horizon in miles is equal to the square root of the height of the observer's eyes above the surface expressed in feet.

The distance to the horizon can be calculated using the formula:

S = [(R+h)2 - R2]½

where: R - radius of the Earth 6367250 m; h is the observation height on the surface.
