The classic VAZ engine (2101-2107) is a very reliable and durable unit, easy to operate and easy to maintain. However, it also has its own “Achilles heel” - a camshaft that suffers greatly from the so-called oil “starvation”, which sometimes occurs in a well-heated engine in two cases: when the oil is thoroughly thinned or when the oil pump and other components are badly worn .

There is a good way to eliminate oil "starvation" - to equip the car with an oil pump that works independently of the engine, supplying oil from the oil pan to the oil system. However, it is quite difficult to make and mount such a unit in the engine compartment. There is a simpler system for additional lubrication of the levers and camshaft cams, which I want to tell the readers of the magazine about.

First of all, let me remind you how the camshaft is lubricated. When the engine is running, the oil pump supplies oil to the central bearing of the camshaft, and then through the annular groove in the bearing journal to the working surfaces of the cams and levers. Further, part of the oil is on the levers, and part, under the action of centrifugal forces, is sprayed, falling on the inner surface of the camshaft housing, and flows down it onto the engine head.

This part of the oil can be directed to additional lubrication of the camshaft cams if oil-catching partitions are installed on the inner surface of the housing, between which the engine oil will first accumulate and then drain directly onto the camshaft cams and valve levers.

Engine oil is retained by the oil sump and flows onto the levers and camshaft cams

Almost every motorist will be able to install an insert for additional lubrication on the engine. This will require any sheet metal about 0,5 mm thick (I, in particular, have partitions made of 0,4 mm thick galvanized sheet). Before bending the workpiece along the marking lines, it is good to apply risks with a sharp awl or scriber, then the fold line will be even and clear.

The finished "accordion" (there will be four of them per engine) is fixed with four small aluminum rivets on the camshaft housing.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

New mirrors with video recording function from Neoline 30.04.2014

Neoline announced the start of sales of a new line of mirrors with a video recording function - G-tech. The flagship Full HD model Neoline G-tech X20 is supplemented with a rear HD camera. The second model of the series - Neoline G-tech X10 is based on the popular Ambarella A2 processor.

New mirrors have a number of advantages over traditional DVRs - they do not impair visibility, do not require additional brackets, and fit seamlessly into the interior of any car. But the main reason for the rapidly growing popularity of this form factor is that such a gadget can simply be left on the windshield and remembered only while saving videos.

Neoline G-tech X20 is a combined solution that combines a rear-view mirror, a "head" video recorder and an additional camera that captures what is happening in the rear hemisphere into a single complex.

The mirror surface of Neoline G-tech X20 is equipped with a special resistive element with a high degree of reflection. A 2,7-inch color display is built into the mirror, and the controls are located on the bottom of the case. To ensure that the image on the screen does not impair the visibility of the mirror, it turns off after 15 seconds of device operation. If desired, the motorist can leave the display on throughout the trip.

The auto gadget is attached to the standard rear-view mirror with rubberized clips that do not leave scratches. The 120-degree viewing angle allows you to capture everything that happens in adjacent lanes.

Neoline G-tech X20 can record video in Full HD resolution 1920x1080 pixels (without interpolation) at 30 frames per second.

The video is encoded in MP4 format - videos can be viewed on any device, be it smartphones, tablets or laptops. The novelty is equipped with all the functions of the latest generation of DVRs, including motion and shock sensors (G-sensor).

The rear camera, which comes with the G-tech X20 mirror, allows you to record what is happening in the rear hemisphere of the car in HD resolution. As a result, the device forms a complete picture of what is happening.

However, not all motorists need a rear camera - for such users, Neoline specialists presented a "light" Neoline G-tech X10 model based on the Ambarella A2 processor with one front camera. At the same time, the recording quality, additional functions, and ergonomics of the built-in video recorder fully correspond to the characteristics of the "older" G-tech X20, Neoline representatives report.

The mirrors are already on sale: the G-tech X20 model can be purchased at a recommended price of $180, and the G-tech X10 at a price of $140 rubles.
