In such technical sports as motorcycle, automobile, karting, both a novice athlete and a more experienced master sometimes have to leave the race during competitions or training due to a technical defect in the engine, in particular, a breakdown of the crank mechanism.

Sports cars such as karts, mass-produced by two factories, have engines from the Kovrovets, Voskhod, M-105, M-106 motorcycles with an engine displacement of 125-175 cm3. The motors of these brands do not meet many of the requirements that athletes place on them during competitions and training. When working with maximum loads, the reason for the frequent failure of engines is the bearing of the lower neck of the crankshaft connecting rod, which turns out to be at critical moments in conditions of insufficient lubrication.

At the Kharkiv Regional Station of Young Technicians, in the laboratory of auto-design, an experimental version of a two-stroke engine with a forced lubrication system for the lower connecting rod bearing was developed and manufactured. The principle of operation of this system is that oil is supplied to the lower connecting rod bearing not by a pump, but due to vacuum in the crank chamber.

Experimental work was carried out on a serial domestic motorcycle engine M-106. By pressing out the pin of the lower head of the connecting rod, the crankshaft is disassembled into five main parts: left cheek, right cheek, connecting rod, separator with rollers, root pin. Then a radial hole Ø 3,5 mm is drilled in the left cheek of the crankshaft; its axis must intersect the axes of the main pin of the crankshaft and the main journal of the crank web. A hole Ø 2,5 mm is drilled in the main journal of the left cheek of the crankshaft, in the zone of the labyrinth seal, perpendicular to the axis of the neck. Due to the fact that the root pin of the crank mechanism is made of high-alloy steel and has increased hardness, the drilling process is extremely difficult. It is better to make a hole on an electric spark machine.

An important role in ensuring the efficient operation of the lubrication system is played by the correct choice of the place for drilling the oil channel in the main journal of the left side of the crankshaft. The channels made in the labyrinth seal and in the main journal must coincide at the moment when, when the crankshaft rotates from the bottom dead center, the lower edge of the piston skirt coincides with the lower edge of the suction port. At this moment, the maximum vacuum is formed in the crank chamber of the engine, which is necessary for the full supply of oil to the lower neck of the connecting rod.

Long motor life
Scheme of the modernized connecting rod and crank assembly: 1 - crank cheek (right), 2 - connecting rod assembly with rollers, 3 - connecting rod pin, 4, 5, 9 - plugs, 6 - crank cheek (left), 7 - crank main journal ( left), 8 - labyrinth seal, 10, 14 - bearings, 11 - crankcase, 12 - lubrication fitting, 13 - metering jet

It is necessary to manufacture two new engine parts: a labyrinth seal, which serves both to seal the crank chamber and to supply oil to the connecting rod main journal, and a fitting. The latter is mounted directly on the left half of the crankcase. It provides for the installation of a metering jet that regulates the supply of oil to the lower head of the crankshaft connecting rod. To supply oil to the fitting, a separate tank with a capacity of 200 ml must be made, connected to the oil line fitting. Due to the fact that the labyrinth seal is installed in place of the main bearing located near the crank chamber, it is necessary to replace the sealing gland with rolling bearing No. 204. By pressing, the labyrinth seal is installed in the crankcase seat, where a hole Ø 4 mm is also drilled and cut M5 thread for fitting. Complete matching of the holes on the labyrinth seal and its seat is required.

The oil tank is installed in any convenient place, but it is desirable that the oil level in it be higher than the level of the fitting installed on the crankcase.

The proposed amount of oil, with the correct selection of the metering jet in the lubrication system, is quite enough for the engine to operate in intensive mode with a run of 20-25 km.

The lubrication system of the crank mechanism increases the reliability and service life of the engine at maximum crankshaft speed.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Asphalt cleans the air 07.07.2006

The Italian company "Ital-sementi" after ten years of scientific research has developed a road surface that purifies the air from automobile exhaust gases.

This is asphalt with the addition of nano-particles of titanium dioxide. Under the action of sunlight, a chemically active additive converts unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen and sulfur oxides into water, carbon dioxide and solid salts.

Experiments carried out in a sealed chamber showed that titanium asphalt, illuminated by fluorescent lamps, decomposes 400% of nitrogen oxides in 99 minutes. The remaining harmful gases, when the road surface is illuminated with sunlight (these experiments were carried out in natural conditions, on the road), decompose by 5%. It is calculated that if only 75% of the streets and squares of a big city are covered with new asphalt, the air in it will become twice as clean.

So far, 900 tons of titanium asphalt have been produced. Its deliveries are planned to 18 countries, including France, India and China.
