This swimming projectile works on the principle of a pump, however, not quite ordinary: it is not the piston that moves in it, but the body.

Styrofoam or wooden fins with a cutout for the legs are attached to the body (length about half a meter), made, for example, from a sheet of roofing iron. Inside the cylinder-body (inner diameter 120 mm), closed on the rod side by a bottom with a suction valve, and on the other side by a bottom with a nozzle hole, an elongated (length 500 mm) conical hollow piston moves freely. It can also be made from tin. The taper angle of the body-nozzle is about 20°. The piston is firmly attached to the rod with the help of cross-racks. The rod passes through the cylinder bore and guide bushing. The rod can be made from a bar or tube, at its free end there is a handle.

The swimmer in the supine position inserts his legs into the slots of the fins, grasps the handle with his hands. When the legs are bent, the hollow piston, as it were, extends beyond the fins. The body is filled with water, which enters through the opened valve and through the nozzle. Now it is enough to straighten the legs with force, as the water pressure in the body closes the valve and the water begins to fly out through the nozzle at high speed. The reactive force will propel the swimmer forward. So, bending and unbending his legs, he will set the torpedo in motion.

There is only one trick in the device - the tail of the piston must certainly protrude beyond the edge of the cylinder-body, otherwise the thrust will disappear, since the output stream will then fill the space between the cylinder and the cone.

A torpedo pump of such a simple design is able to give the swimmer a speed several times greater than. if he swam in the usual way.
