PERSONAL TRANSPORT: GROUND, WATER, AIR
Running on the waves. Personal transport Directory / Personal transport: land, water, air In this case, the appendix to the letter did not arouse editorial enthusiasm either. It consisted of one sheet of paper with two drawn "children's" projections of a hypothetical boat, having in the bow part either propeller or automobile wheels with "lugs". In short, due to the fact that the letter cited the results of an impromptu experiment carried out literally in a barrel of rainwater and using an electric drill as an engine, it was decided, in accordance with the wishes of the author, to place the material in the heading "Attention, experiment" (calculated in mainly for model athletes). There are a lot of prepared proposals for this column in the editorial "portfolio", and Anatoly's letter would have been lying, waiting for its turn, if not for one of the publications in the journal "Inventor and Rationalizer" ... However, let me stretch out the fun and talk about the rest in a few numbers later. In the meantime, we will present you with a more than tempting opportunity to think out and understand all the subtleties (and at the same time the prospects) of the invention yourself. After a couple of months, you will be able to compare the results of your reflections with ours. Now the editors warmly congratulate A. Kuzmin on a real design find and allow themselves to preface the materials with the words: The principle of operation of the new mover is very simple. On a thin disk-rotor, small wings are fixed around the circumference at an angle of 5-10°. The rotor is partially submerged in water. When it rotates, a lifting force is created that pushes the propulsor out of the water and at the same time propels the vehicle forward.
I tested the rotary propulsion model: the results exceeded all expectations. I was delighted! The test model was simple: a disk with a diameter of 160 mm on a long shaft clamped in an electric drill chuck. 16 triangular wings are soldered along the circumference of the disk, the span of which is 20 mm, and the chord is 35 mm. The installation angle is 10°. When the electric motor was turned on, the rotor literally jumped out of the water! Measurements showed that at 800 rpm the lifting force is about 300-400 gf, and its greatest value is achieved when the rotor is deepened by 0,2-0,15 diameters. At the same time, a significant thrust develops - about 300 gauss. However, an unexpected side also came to light - in a number of cases, the rotor began to jump. I want to appeal to enthusiasts with a proposal to make an attempt to build a working model with a rotary propulsion or a boat. I would venture to advise something to those who dare to do this: the engine must be powerful enough, and the weight of the apparatus should be small. The rotor speed is the maximum based on the fact that at the initial stage of lifting the apparatus from the water, the resistance to rotation can be significant, and after entering the stroke mode, it drops sharply. It should also be taken into account that when the speed is dropped at high speed, the bow of the boat may “fall through” with sharp braking - with a high position of the center of gravity of the device, it cannot be ruled out that it will tip over through the bow. I would like to note such potential positive qualities of the mover as (besides the simplicity of design, the possibility of creating very high-speed vessels with extremely shallow draft and short braking time) ... some amphibious nature of the project. After all, with sufficient strength of the rotors, the boat will be able to go ashore on its own. It is possible that during the tests, negative aspects will also appear: noisy operation, splashing, the possibility of damage to the blades by foreign objects in the water, the need for protective covers. The disadvantages include the use of a powerful engine and, as a result, a high fuel consumption. But, I think, the positive qualities of the new mover will be able to cover the shortcomings.
