Rust occupies a larger volume than the iron from which it is obtained. This is natural: during rusting, oxygen is added to iron, the compound takes up more space than pure metal.

This phenomenon can cause catastrophic consequences for architectural structures. The stone blocks that make up the belfry of St. Paul's Cathedral in London (1675-1710) were held together with iron staples laid over the rows of stones in grooves cut into the stone. For hundreds of years, the braces rusted, increased in volume and began to lift layers of stone, which caused the bell tower to warp.

It has been calculated that the strength of the rust is such that the "swelling" of the iron would raise the rows of stones even if the bell tower were 2250 kilometers high! I had to dismantle the masonry and replace the iron staples with stainless steel ones.

But the power of rust can be put to good use. The dome over the reading room of the British Museum (1854-1858) is held together by rust. The cast-iron parts of its grating were fastened with a "putty" of iron filings with ammonia, mixed with water. The sawdust quickly turned into rust, the mixture hardened and tightly filled the gaps between the parts. She tightly bursts the details, pressing them to each other and to the frame.

The power of rust

The picture shows an experiment that clearly shows the expansion of the metal during rusting. The bolt with washers was exposed to pressurized carbon dioxide at 5000 degrees Celsius for 4000 hours. The washers rusted, became thicker and stretched the steel bolt.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>
