Area: Purple foxglove is distributed throughout the world as an ornamental plant, and also grows wild in forests, fields, along roadsides and on mountain slopes.

Chemical composition: The main active ingredient of the plant are digitalis glycosides, including digitoxin and digoxin, which have a cardiotonic effect.

Economic value: Digitalis purpurea is used medicinally to treat heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and other heart conditions. It is also widely used in landscape design as an ornamental plant.

Legends, myths, symbolism: Some legends associate foxglove with witches, as its flowers may resemble a witch's hat. It is also said that foxglove can help find love and attract wealth. Symbolically, foxglove is associated with sensuality, beauty, and sophistication, but it can also indicate a certain fragility and vulnerability.

Synonyms thimble grass.

A two- and perennial herbaceous plant of the norichnikov family (Scrophulariaceae), which in the first year forms a rosette of basal, oblong, oblong-ovate or oval leaves up to 30 cm long and up to 15 cm wide. In the second year of life, it throws out one or more erect stems.

Stem lower leaves 12-20 cm long, ovate, long-petiolate, medium short-petiolate, upper sessile ovate or ovate-lanceolate.

The flowers are beautiful, purple, large, collected at the top of the stems in a one-sided brush.

Blooms in June-July.

Range and habitats. Europe Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, UK, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Italy (Sardinia), France (including Corsica), Portugal, Spain; North Africa Morocco.

Chemical composition. The leaves, stems and flowers of foxglove contain cardiac glycosides. The leaves and seeds contain steroidal saponins digitonin, gitonin, tigonin and their aglycones; Sarsapogenin. Also found are flavonoids-luteolin and 7-glucoside-luteolin, digitolutein, caffeic acid, choline, etc.

For medical purposes, use digitoxin, dried foxglove leaves in the form of infusion and other herbal forms.

Application in medicine. Purple foxglove has a multifaceted effect on the body on the vessels, on the center and peripheral endings of the vagus nerve, kidneys, intestines, and the central nervous system.

Other uses. Digitalis purpurea is used as an ornamental plant in horticulture and as a cut flower in floristry.

Ethnoscience:

  • Infusion for the treatment of heart ailments: Pour 1 tablespoon of dry foxglove leaves with 1 cup of boiling water, leave for 30 minutes, strain and take 1 tablespoon 3 times a day before meals.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing purple foxglove:

Cultivation:

  • Choice of soil and light: Foxglove purple prefers partial shade or shade. It can grow in a variety of soil types, but prefers fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Landing: Choose a landing site that is in partial shade or shade. Dig a hole about 30 cm deep and 30-40 cm wide. Before planting, add organic fertilizer and mix it into the soil.
  • Depth and distance between plants: Plant the plants at a depth of about 5-10 cm and at a distance of about 30-40 cm from each other.
  • Plant care: Digitalis purple needs regular watering, especially during a period of severe drought. It also needs regular feeding and pruning.

Fully integrated opto-electronic four-channel multiplexer 23.05.2015

Until recently, the greatest progress in the development of solutions for silicon photonics was demonstrated by Intel. She almost reached the commercial implementation of the project, when optical communication lines could appear within the server rack. The traditional implementation of optical communications within a rack and a separate computer is too expensive for short distances (a lot of connectors, converters and interface nodes are required).

Silicon photonics - the integration of optical and electrical circuits in a single semiconductor solution - can recoup investments and significantly increase the throughput of inter-chip interfaces.

According to a company press release, IBM has launched the industry's first fully integrated optical-electronic four-channel multiplexer. The solution carries four 25-Gbps optical inputs and outputs and is focused on organizing one 100-Gbps optical channel. In this case, a 100-Gbps duplex channel is organized using a simple single-mode optical fiber.

Practical tests have shown the ability of the modules to transmit data without slowing down at a distance of up to 2 km. This enables the company to replace repeaters in its data centers with solutions using silicon photonics, which could be the first commercial project in this area.

IBM optoelectronic components are made on SOI substrates using a smaller scale process than 100 nm. They do not carry semiconductor lasers, which are still implemented as discrete elements. Integration into the solutions of lasers will be the next step towards the introduction of silicon photonics. But even without this step, the developers have moved far enough to begin commercial implementation of the latest hybrid technologies.
