The homeland of the plant is Asia. Motherwort is not native to Europe - this species has naturalized here over the past millennium: since the medicinal properties of the plant have been known since ancient times, it was specially grown near housing, in the Middle Ages planting plants were common for every monastery and university botanical garden. However, the plant in Europe has not spread too much. This is due to the fact that its habitats coincide with those of plants from the genus Nettle (Urtica), which are more competitive compared to motherwort.

Motherwort heart (common motherwort, five-lobed motherwort)

Chemical composition. In the grass of motherwort five-lobed, alkaloids (0,035-0,4%) were found, contained only at the beginning of flowering; also found stakhidrin, so pl. 235°C, saponins, tannins, bitter and sugary substances, essential oil (0,05%). A new flavonoid glycoside has been isolated. Motherwort grass is harvested during flowering in July without thick lower stems.

The raw material is the tops of the stems with flowers and leaves up to 40 cm long, with a slight odor and a bitter taste; humidity not more than 13%, total ash not more than 12%, extractives extracted with 70% alcohol, not less than 10%; leaves, browned and yellowed, not more than 5%, stems thicker than 4 mm, not more than 3%, organic and mineral impurities, not more than 2%.

In the Siberian motherwort, collected during flowering, the alkaloid leonurin was found, hydrolyzing to form lilac acid.

Application in medicine. Motherwort preparations have sedative properties, lower blood pressure and slow down the rhythm of heart contractions. In folk medicine, motherwort is known as a remedy for palpitations. Since the 30s of the XX century, it has been used in medicine as a sedative in the form of an alcohol-water extract. Motherwort extract is well tolerated by patients and is effective in cases where valerian is usually used.

Motherwort may be more effective than valerian in some cases of cardiac neurosis.

The medicinal properties of the motherwort extract have been established in cardiovascular neuroses, in the early stages of hypertension, in angina pectoris, cardiosclerosis, myocarditis and myocardial dystrophy, heart defects and Graves' disease.

Infusion and alcoholic tincture of motherwort are active as an antihypertensive and sedative in the early stages of hypertension, with neurosis, in some cases with Meniere's syndrome.

Other uses. Motherwort is a good honey plant. Honey is yellowish in color, transparent, with a pleasant specific aroma and good taste. According to three-year data, the sugar content in the nectar of one flower reached 0,205 mg. A flowering plant is well visited by bees all daylight hours, regardless of air temperature. Up to 1-2 bees were counted per 45 m47 of thickets, simultaneously working on the collection of nectar. Honey productivity is 100-300 kg/ha.

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Best time of day to get vaccinated 08.11.2021

A group of scientists from Switzerland and Germany conducted a study on the activity of the immune system depending on the time of day. They determined the best time to administer the vaccine.

Scientists from the University of Geneva in Switzerland and the Ludwig Maximilian University in Germany found that the immune system has a different perception depending on the time of day. For their study, they conducted experiments on mice and used human skin cells.

It turned out that the migration of immune cells from the skin to the lymph nodes fluctuates within 24 hours. And this once again proves that the circadian clock is one of the most fundamental biological mechanisms.

The immune system is more functional in the resting phase, just before the resumption of activity - this is at night and early in the morning. It is the morning that is best suited for administering a vaccine to a person and conducting antitumor therapy.

"It takes weeks for the adaptive immune system to form a pathogen-specific response. This response then lasts for a long time thanks to the mechanism of cellular memory," said one of the authors of the study, Professor of Pathology and Immunology Christopher Scheuermann.
