Sabadilla (lice seed), Schoenocaulon officinale. Basic information about the plant, use in medicine

Sabadilla (nitty seed)

Perennial bulbous plant, a species of the genus Schenocaulon of the Melantiaceae family.

Sabadilla is a perennial bulbous plant. From the bulb develop 5-6 linear leaves and one flower arrow, reaching up to 1 m in height.

Flowers inconspicuous greenish. Inflorescence spike-shaped.

The fruit is a three-celled drop-down box. Each nest contains 2-3 seeds. The seeds are oblong-lanceolate in shape and dark brown in color. They are 5-9 mm long and up to 2 mm across, somewhat curved, pointed at the apex, thickened and rounded at the base, where the scar is visible. The surface of the seed is covered with longitudinal wrinkles. There is no smell. The taste is pungent and bitter. The seeds cause strong salivation. Powder from them strongly irritates the respiratory tract and mucous membranes of the eyes and nose.

It grows in alpine meadows in the mountains of Central America and in the northern part of South America.

Sabadilla seeds (Semen Sabadillae) contain 4-5% steroidal alkaloids, the sum of which is known as "veratrin". The main one in this amount is cevadin, which is an esterified derivative of cevanin in the form of a glycoside.

A decoction of seeds and tincture are used as an antiparasitic agent. Veratrin is used in ointments as an irritant and distraction for neuritis and rheumatism. The seeds taken orally cause diarrhea and vomiting, and in an increased dose - a general breakdown and death.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Time in nature is perceived differently 06.04.2024

In today's world, saturated with technology and the fast pace of life, the perception of time plays a key role in our daily experience. However, new research by scientists has revealed that our perception of time can change significantly depending on the environment around us. This impact is especially noticeable from nature.

A study led by psychologist Ricardo Correia from the University of Turku in Finland found an interesting connection between our perception of time and exposure to natural environments. Scientists have found that time seems to pass slower when we are outdoors, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Walking through the countryside or spending time in green parks creates the feeling that time is increasing. This effect of nature extends not only to current moments, but also to our perception of the past and future. Through contact with nature, we become less prone to instant gratification, preferring long-term goals.

Why does nature have such an impact on our perception of time? This is due to the many benefits that come from being in a natural environment. Scientists note that nature helps reduce anxiety, improve sleep and overall well-being. These factors influence how we perceive the past, present and future.

However, access to nature is not always easy, especially for city dwellers. Creating green spaces in urban areas is becoming increasingly important to make the benefits of nature available to everyone. For those who don't have access to nature often, other strategies can help, such as time-use audits or reducing time spent on digital devices.

Nature has a significant impact on our perception of time and overall well-being. Understanding this connection can help us manage our time more effectively and strive for a more balanced lifestyle.
