Horseradish gulyavnikovy (meadow horseradish), Armoracia sisymbrioides. Description, illustrations of the plant

Horseradish horseradish (meadow horseradish), Armoracia sisymbrioides (D. C.) Cajand. Classification, synonyms, botanical description, nutritional value, cultivation

Horseradish gulyavnikovy (meadow horseradish)

In Siberia and the Far East, the species of horseradish Armoracia sisymbrioides (D. C.) Cajand, the so-called horseradish gulyavnikovy or meadow horseradish, is common.

The root is long, up to 1 cm thick or more; the stem is straight, branched at the top, 40-120 cm tall, ribbed, together with the leaves completely bare; leaves are bluish-green, basal, often very large, oblong or almost lanceolate, gradually narrowed towards the base and then descending along the petiole, rounded serrate-toothed.

On specimens from flooded places, the lower stem leaves are pinnately incised or pinnatipartite into linear, entire lobes; on plants from non-flooded places, the lower stem leaves are entire, middle and upper - oval, oblong and lanceolate, sessile, deeply heart-shaped at the base, amplexicaul, unevenly toothed , sometimes entire.

Racemes with fruits elongated, collected at the end of the stem and branches paniculate: pedicels 10-30 mm long; petals uniculate, rounded at apex, 2-2,5 times as long as sepals and stamens; pods oblong, 12-29 mm long, 3-6,5 mm wide, often somewhat recurved, equal or somewhat shorter than pedicels, with very short style and wide two-lobed stigma.

The valves are strongly convex, the follicle is compressed perpendicular to the septum; the septum is incomplete, in the form of a border along the edge; columns 0,75-1,75 mm long, 1,25 wide; seeds are red-brown, finely punctate, about 1,5 mm in diameter.

It reproduces mainly vegetatively, by root offspring, so single horseradish plants are rare, it usually grows in "nests", all plants of which can have a single root system. The flowering period is extended from June to August, the fruits also do not ripen at the same time, many do not have time to ripen before frost, so seed propagation does not play a significant role.

Horseradish root is widely used, its roots, rich in vitamin C, are widely used as a food seasoning, especially for meat dishes. It also has medical significance as an antiscorbutic prophylactic.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Horseradish (Armoracia sisymbrioides), also known as meadow horseradish, is a cruciferous plant that can be grown in the garden or in the garden.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing meadow horseradish:

Cultivation:

  • Horseradish prefers loose, fertile soils with a high content of organic matter. Choose a sunny location for planting.
  • Plant horseradish plants at a depth of 5-7 cm and at a distance of 30-40 cm from each other. Plant plants in spring or early fall.
  • Horseradish needs regular watering, especially during hot weather. Make sure that the soil is always moist, but not oversaturated with moisture.

Workpiece:

  • Horseradish can be harvested and used all year round, but the best time to harvest the roots is in the fall when the plant is dormant.
  • To collect the roots, dig them out with a shovel. Clean the roots of dirt and cut off excess roots.
  • Roots can be cut into pieces and used fresh or dried for later storage.

Storage:

  • Fresh horseradish can be stored in the refrigerator for several weeks.
  • Horseradish can be dried and stored in paper bags or glass jars in a cool, dry place throughout the year.
  • To keep the horseradish as spicy as possible, it is recommended to cut it just before consumption.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Graphene will improve HDD 24.06.2021

Scientists at the Cambridge Graphene Center have shown that graphene can be used to create ultra-high-density hard drives, providing a tenfold leap over current technology.

Hard drives, which have been widely used in personal computers since the mid-1980s, have become smaller in this time, but significantly more capacious. Although they are being squeezed out by SSDs, HDDs are still popular due to their lower cost.

The increase in volumes is due to the increase in recording density, which in turn is provided by the improvement of two key components: platters and heads. In particular, developments that made it possible to reduce the gap between them.

At present, a significant part of this gap is occupied by carbon-based coatings - layers designed to protect the plate from mechanical damage and corrosion. Since 1990, recording density has quadrupled and coating thickness has decreased from 12,5 nm to about 3 nm. These parameters correspond to a density of 1 terabyte per square inch.

The Cambridge researchers replaced current coatings with graphene (from one to four layers) and tested friction, wear, corrosion, thermal stability and lubricant compatibility. It turned out that, in addition to its unrivaled thinness, graphene has all the ideal properties of the external coating for hard drives in terms of corrosion protection, low friction, wear resistance, hardness, compatibility with lubricants and surface smoothness. It reduces friction by half and provides better protection against corrosion and wear than current solutions. In fact, one layer of graphene reduces corrosion by 2,5 times.

The team also tested locally heated media recording (HAMR), a new technology that can increase storage density. Unlike graphene, the coatings currently in use do not operate at the temperatures required for HAMR. As stated, graphene in combination with HAMR will increase the recording density to an unprecedented level - more than 10 terabytes per square inch.
