Martinia, Martynia L. Classification, synonyms, botanical description, nutritional value, cultivation

Martinia

Names: fr. martynia, cornaret, cornes du diable, bicorne, ongles du diable; English unicorn plant, elephant trunk; German Gemsenhorner, Riisselpflanze; Swede, enhornings-planta; Polish pajecznik.

There are two types of martinia: Martynia lutea Lindl. - with yellow flowers, originally from Brazil, and M. proboscidea Glox. - with purple flowers, originally from Louisiana (USA).

Martinia is an annual plant, reaches 45-60 cm in height and spreads widely in width, with original pods resembling an elephant's trunk. The pods are green, very hairy, with a maximum diameter of 37,5 mm, curving in a long horn. Young green pods are salted like cucumbers.

G. Thompson recommends sowing martinia in rows in the south (spacing - 90 cm) and thinning by 45-60 cm. In northern conditions, it is grown using seedlings, like northern melons or pumpkins.

Martinia

The plant (especially in the north) prefers easily warmed soils. Used for pickles.

In addition to those named, another type of martini is cultivated (in Mexico and the USA) - M. fragrans Lindley, which has the same purpose as the other two. In the species M. craniolaria Swartz (Craniolaria annua L), native to tropical America, the roots are used as scorzonera.

Martinia, Martynia. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Martinia (Martynia) is a plant of the Martiniaceae family that grows in the tropics. Its edible fruits are used in cooking and medicine.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing martinia:

Cultivation:

  • Martinia requires a warm and sunny climate, well-drained soil and adequate moisture.
  • Reproduction occurs through seeds that can be planted in the ground in spring or summer.
  • Martinia needs regular watering and fertilizing during periods of growth and flowering.
  • The plant grows best in a sunny position.

Workpiece:

  • Martinia is used in cooking for salads and side dishes. Its fruits have a large size and a strong shell, which must be removed before use.
  • To remove the shell, the martini fruit must be frozen, then cut lengthwise and the seeds and shell removed.
  • Martini can also be used as animal feed.

Storage:

  • Martinia can be stored in a cool and dry place for several months, provided that the fruits have been properly processed.
  • Peeled martinia fruits can be frozen for several months.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

The character of a dog does not depend on the breed 16.01.2024

American scientists conducted a study in which the genomes of more than 2 thousand dogs were studied and published the results of their observations. The main conclusion of the study is that breed is not a determining factor in shaping a pet’s character, including its aggressiveness and tendency to obey the owner’s commands.

“Our analysis of the opinions of dog owners and the genomes of their pets showed that belonging to certain breeds explains only 9% of the variability in their behavior. This indicates that the characteristic behavioral traits of dogs were formed randomly during the evolution of their ancestors long before the advent of modern decorative dogs. varieties," the scientists note.

There are more than three hundred officially recognized dog breeds on the planet, but only a small number have been bred to perform specific tasks. Most breeds have appeared in the last three hundred years as ornamental varieties. In determining the breed of a dog, its exterior, appearance and similarity to “reference samples” play a major role. However, for owners, the character and behavior of their pet is more important: aggressiveness towards strangers and devotion to its owner.

A team of geneticists led by Professor Elinora Carlson from the University of Massachusetts at Worcester has found clear evidence that dogs' behavior has little to do with their breed. During the study, the genomes of 2,1 thousand dogs representing 78 breeds were deciphered. In addition, scientists conducted surveys among owners aimed at assessing eight key character traits of dogs.

Geneticists have identified 11 DNA sections that significantly affect the behavior of dogs, but are not associated with specific breeds. Further analysis of genomes and survey results showed that breed did not play a decisive role in shaping the character of both purebreds and mixed breeds of different breeds.

Belonging to a breed explained only about 9% of the behavior of pets. The remaining more than 90% of the variation in their character is due to mutations in genes passed on by individual dogs from their ancestors.

Research shows that dogs' personalities are largely determined by genetic factors unrelated to their breed. These results are important for understanding the behavioral characteristics of dogs and making adjustments to the upbringing and training of animals.
