Winter cress (American winter cress, early colza)

Synonyms: Erysimum praecox Sm.

Names: fr. cresson de terre, s. vivace, p. des vignes, cressonnette de jardin, roquette; English american cress, upland grayseed early winter cress, belle-isle cress; German Americanische Wintercresse; Swede, winterkrasse; it. Crescione di jardino; Spanish Berrovivaz ode tierra; Polish rzezucha zimova, mniszek ogrodowy.

Biennial plant of North American origin; resembles the common colza Barbarea vulgaris R. Br. The young leaves of both plants are eaten as a salad. They have a somewhat spicy taste, reminiscent of the root or green radish - Raphanus caudatus L.

It is cultivated on ordinary garden soils.

Winter cress is grown in French gardens. Improved wintercress is especially suitable for cultivation.

American cress prefers moist, not too light nutrient soil and a somewhat shady location. Sowing it is done in June-July on a slightly shaded bed thickened (then the plants should be transplanted more sparsely) or sparsely at a distance of 20-30 cm between rows and 10-15 cm in rows.

Sowing seeds of winter cress can be done in spring, summer, and autumn, i.e. Anytime.

When sown in June-July, the seeds ripen in July of the next year, and the pods and stems shrink and turn yellow. Then the stems are cut, dried, and the seeds are threshed or husked and cleaned.

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Winter cress (Barbarea praecox), also known as American winter cress or early turnip, is a perennial plant in the cabbage family native to northern Europe and Asia.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing wintercress:

Cultivation:

  • Wintercress is best grown in temperate climates with well-drained soil and moderate moisture. Wintercress plants require regular watering and fertilization.
  • Plant winter cress seeds 1-2 cm deep in fertile soil. Wintercress plants grow quickly, so it is recommended to plant them at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other.
  • Wintercress can be grown outdoors or in pots. If you are growing wintercress in pots, use a soil that drains water quickly.

Workpiece:

  • Wintercress is used in the food industry, especially as a spicy herb and salad dressing. It can be eaten both fresh and cooked.
  • Harvest wintercress when it reaches maturity. Mature wintercress has bright green leaves and a pungent taste.
  • To use winter cress, rinse it under cold water and cut into pieces.

Storage:

  • Winter cress is stored in a cool and dry place to maintain its quality and freshness. Store wintercress in the refrigerator or in a cool place.
  • Wintercress can last up to several days in the refrigerator if properly packaged and stored in a cool environment.
  • Check wintercress for signs of damage or hardening before use. If wintercress has curds, it can be used to make soups, purees, or other dishes.
  • Wintercress can also be frozen to extend its shelf life. To do this, winter cress should be washed, dried and then cut into pieces. The wintercress should then be spread out in a single layer on a baking sheet and placed in the freezer for a few hours to freeze. Wintercress can then be packaged in freezer bags and stored in the freezer for up to 6 months.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Magnetic tumbler for cage 19.02.2008

US scientists are learning how to use magnets to control the behavior of cells. To make a cell do a job - to beat an enemy microbe or produce insulin - it is necessary to act on its corresponding receptor. As a rule, doctors do this with the help of artificially administered hormones.

"We propose to go down a completely different path - to use nanomagnets," says Dr. Don Ingber of Boston Children's Hospital. In their first experiments, the scientists created magnetic particles 30 nm in size with an inner core only 5 nm in diameter. Particles of this size turned out to be in a superparamagnetic state, that is, by applying a magnetic field, they could be transferred many times both to a magnetic and a non-magnetic state. Each particle was combined with one antigen molecule corresponding to the receptor of immune system cells.

"One antigen per particle is very important," says co-worker Dr. Robert Mannicke. "We wanted to attach each particle to only one receptor so that we could control a single cell." As the experiments showed, it was possible to organize such control: cells, to the receptors of which nanomagnets were attached, under the influence of a magnetic field, opened channels for the passage of calcium ions inside. And without a magnetic field, nothing like this was observed.

"We hope that in the future, with the help of magnetic nanoparticles, it will be possible to control many processes in a living organism and at the same time do without drugs. For example, a person with diabetes, after eating sweets, will be able to stimulate insulin-producing cells transplanted under his skin with a magnet," Don Ingber says.
