phlox

The name of the plant comes from the Greek word "floco", which means "flame".

Phlox - this is the name given to the plant in 1737 by Carl Linnaeus for the red color of flowers in ancestral forms. But although the Greek name was given to phloxes, they were brought from America in the XNUMXth century. Annual phlox - from Texas, perennial - from Canada.

According to legend, Odysseus and the sailors, descending into the underworld of Hades, held flickering torches in their hands, which illuminated their path. When they got out of the dungeon, they threw the torches on the ground. They sprouted and turned into phlox flowers in memory of the brave Odysseus. Only the god of love Eros, the secret guardian angel of the legendary hero, quietly following Odysseus, did not part with his torch.

Tired of the long journey, Eros dozed off on the bank of the stream. At this time, the nymph stole a torch and extinguished it in the waters of the source, which immediately boiled, lit up and gained a magical gift to heal the sick and the weak.

In Rus', in the old days, phloxes were called chintz. And there is such a legend. Once upon a time there lived a dressmaker girl in the village. She was a beauty and a craftswoman. She had a beloved boyfriend, and they were going to get married, but they took him to the soldiers. And the girl sat at the window from morning to evening, sewing clothes for people, a needle flashed in her hands, and her eyes were covered with tears. The girl accidentally pricked her finger, and from this drop of blood a wonderful scarlet flower grew - fiery, like love in her heart, red, like a drop of her blood.

Phloxes awaken emotions, make you feel more subtle and at the same time rich. They say that if you put a flower of purple or cherry phlox on the pillow of a sleeping lover, feelings that have begun to cool down will flare up with renewed vigor.

And in order to ward off the lovebird from her husband, you need to bury an inflorescence of pale blue phlox dried in the sun near her house.

Phlox. Botanical description, plant history, legends and folk traditions, cultivation and use

phlox

Translated from Greek, "phlox" means "flame", and it was this name that was given to the plant in 1737 by Carl Linnaeus for the red color of the flowers of the ancestors of the forms. According to legend, they were flaming torches in the hands of sailors and Odysseus descending into the underground kingdom of Hades.

They were secretly followed by the god of love, Eros, who constantly guarded Odysseus' love for Penelope. When the companions got out of the dungeon and threw the torches to the ground, they sprouted and turned into phlox flowers in memory of the brave Odysseus, Eros did not part with the torch, but, tired of the difficult journey, suddenly dozed off. While he was sleeping, the nymph stole the torch and, in order to leave unnoticed, decided to extinguish it in the nearest source. But when she lowered the torch into the water, the source lit up, boiled, and its water became healing.

Now weak people go to bathe in healing waters and return young strength to their bodies. After all, Eros once lit a torch from the burning gaze of a girl in love, and love warmed the water.

Phloxes bloom profusely, forming a real torch-flower procession with an abundant aroma reminiscent of the aroma of the steppes. The color of the flowers is incredibly bright: carmine, raspberry, burgundy, beige, purple, lilac, blue, motley.

Most of the species are perennial and annual plants and shrubs, distributed mainly in North America.

A whole bunch of flowers can be located on one stem, folded in a kind of dome. Phlox blooms from June to September, its different varieties are divided into early, middle and late according to flowering time.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Self-service bike taxi 02.03.2007

In Lyon (France), 200 bicycles are scattered around the city in 2000 parking lots, which can be used by anyone who buys a special card at a kiosk or vending machine.

To unhook the car from the pole in the parking lot, to which it is attached with a cable, you need to insert a subscription card into the slot on the pole. The first half hour of the ride is free, then the card is debited at euros per hour. The main thing is to return the bike to the nearest parking lot after the trip, because 24 hours after taking it from the parking lot, it starts to emit a shrill beep and reports the delay to the central control room.

Electronic automation monitors the condition of the bike and does not allow it to be unhooked from the post if the brakes or headlight are faulty or the tires are flat.

This year the example of Lyon is going to be followed by Nantes and Toulouse.
