Family: Caryophyllaceae (Caryophyllaceae)

Origin: The genus Saponaria has about 20 species that are found in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa.

Area: Different species of Saponaria are distributed in different regions of the world. For example, Saponaria officinalis, or true soapwort, is native to Europe, Asia, and North America.

Chemical composition: Plants of the genus Saponaria contain saponins, which are natural surfactants. These substances can be used to make soaps and shampoos.

Economic value: Saponaria officinalis is used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments such as coughs, bronchitis and rheumatism. It is also used as a soap and shampoo due to the high content of saponins in the roots and stems of the plant. Some species of Saponaria are popular in horticulture for their decorative flowers, which can be white, pink, or red.

Legends, myths, symbolism: Symbolically, soapwort is often associated with cleansing and spiritual cleansing. Its soapy properties can symbolize the plant's ability to purify not only the body, but also the soul. In some cultures, soapwort is also associated with love and attraction, perhaps because of its beautiful flowers and pleasant scent.

Soapweed, Saponaria. Tips for growing, harvesting and storing

cultivated and wild plants. Legends, myths, symbolism, description, cultivation, methods of application

Soapweed is a plant from the clove family that can be grown in the garden or in the backyard.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing soapwort:

Cultivation:

  • The soapwort prefers a sunny location and well-drained soils. It can survive in different conditions, but its yield and quality are better on nutritious soils;
  • Planting is done in spring or autumn, to a depth of 1-2 cm;
  • Caring for soapwort does not require much effort, regular watering and weeding are enough.

Workpiece:

  • To obtain soap from soapwort, rhizomes and stems are used, which are collected during the flowering period (in June-July);
  • The collected parts of the plant are washed in cold water, cut into pieces and dried in the sun or in a dryer at a temperature not exceeding 50 degrees;
  • Dried parts of the plant can be stored in a dark place for up to 2-3 years.

Storage:

  • Ready-made soap from soapwort should be stored in a dry and cool place, protected from direct sunlight and moisture;
  • If the soap has a pronounced aroma, then it is better to pack it in paper or polyethylene so as not to infect other products with its smell.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

AI will help Meta achieve realistic sound in virtual worlds 29.06.2022

Meta Company spoke about the work on realistic sound technologies for virtual worlds - the project is being implemented with the assistance of scientists from the University of Texas at Austin. As part of the project, three artificial intelligence models were developed that are available to third-party developers.

As Kristen Garuman, professor of computer science at the University of Texas and director of research at Meta AI, explained, augmented and virtual reality cannot be reduced to only visual component - sound plays an important role in bringing the world to life. Its quality is influenced by various factors: the geometry of the room, the objects placed in it, as well as the distance to the source. Therefore, the idea was born to use artificial intelligence algorithms for sound processing.

The first algorithm is called AviTAR, a "Visual-Acoustic Matching Model" that transforms sound according to the environment. To explain how the algorithm works, the authors of the project gave an example. The mother attended the performance of her child and, using augmented reality glasses, recorded it directly from the auditorium. The algorithm is activated when the woman wants to play the recording at home. The system scans the room, taking into account the interior items located in it, and plays the recording in such a way as if the young artist were performing in the same hall.

The second algorithm is called Visually-Informed Dereverberation. It is intended to remove the reverberation effect from the recording - multiple echoes that occur when sound reflects from walls and other objects. Returning to the example of the children's concert, the mother, when playing the recording at home, will hear nothing but music.

Finally, the third AI model is called VisualVoice - it separates the human voice from other sound sources. For example, if you record a video of two people arguing, the algorithm will highlight one of the voices, drowning out all the others.

As explained in Meta, for this, artificial intelligence needs visual cues - it must "see" who is speaking, and based on this information, distinguish the necessary nuances in the general stream.
