Origin: The homeland of the wild pear is Europe and Western Asia.

Area: It grows in the temperate climate of Eurasia and North Africa. In the wild, it is found on forest edges and glades, as well as on rocks and rocky mountain slopes.

Chemical composition: Dietary fibers, vitamin C, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, iron and copper, pectins, flavonoids, anthocyanins and other phenolic compounds.

Economic value: Wild pears are practically not used in industry, but they are an important source of genetic material for cultivated pear breeding. The cultivated pear is grown on industrial plantations and is used in the food and confectionery industries, as well as in folk medicine.

Legends, myths, symbolism: In ancient Chinese mythology, the wild pear was associated with fearlessness and courage. According to legend, a tree with wild pears grew in the Shanxi mountains, and only the most courageous and courageous warriors could get to them and pick the fruits. The wild pear in this legend symbolized fearlessness and strength. In European culture, the wild pear was associated with mythical creatures such as fairies and forest spirits. The wild pear grows in deciduous forests almost always next to the apple tree along the edges and clearings.

There are many species and varieties of wild pears in nature, which differ greatly from each other in size and shape of fruits, taste and quality. The taste qualities are different - from sweet and almost without astringency - to very tart with a bitter-sour taste. The fruits of wild pears are used by the population mainly after a long maturation.

Most often, wild pears are dried for compotes. In Dagestan, dry pears are ground into flour, which is added to corn and barley flour when baking sweet bread, flat cakes, pancakes, and sweet cookies.

Pear fruits contain glucose, fructose, sucrose, malic and citric acids, tannins and essential oils. The best tasting wines, ciders, liqueurs, and liqueurs are prepared from pear juice, which has a lot of tannins.

Fresh fruits of a pear are the most tasty after preliminary aging. At the same time, part of the starch turns into sugar, acidity decreases, and the content of tannins decreases. Harvest pears after full ripening. Undamaged fruits are chosen for maturation.

Pears are unsuitable for making marmalade and jams, as they contain a lot of so-called stony cells. However, pickled pears have an excellent taste and are well preserved.

Pears are sorted and thoroughly washed in cold water, put in glass jars or even barrels and poured with syrup. To prepare a syrup for 10 liters of water, take 170 g of sugar, 50 g of salt, 10 g of cinnamon and cloves. The syrup is boiled and cooled. Syrup-drenched pears are placed in a cool place. It is advisable to cover the bottom of the barrel or jar with a thin layer of rye straw before laying the pears.

Pickled pears are eaten separately, used as a seasoning for meat dishes, poultry.

Pear fruits are widely used in folk medicine. Liqueurs are good for indigestion and intestines, compote is used as an antipyretic and anti-febrile agent, pear juice is used as a diuretic. The mask is washed off with warm water, the skin is dried with a soft towel and lubricated with a nourishing cream, especially in the presence of wrinkles around the eyes, heavy eyelids.

Pear masks are preferred from wild stale pears, which contain more vitamins, organic and biologically active substances compared to cultivated varieties.

If there are a lot of stony cells in wild pears, they use a piece of gauze with holes for the eyes, nose and mouth, on which a layer of fruit mass is applied, and not directly on the skin of the face.
