Grows in alpine (subalpine) meadows. Needs full protection.

It occurs almost throughout Europe (with the exception of Poland, the Baltic countries and Russia) from Spain in the west to Turkey in the east.

Gentian yellow

The plant contains the glycoside gentiopicrin and amarogencin, which cause its bitter taste, the alkaloid gentianin, iridoids, flavonoids, catechins, ascorbic acid, fatty oil (about 6%), pectins, essential oil, tannins, resin and mucus.

Gentian roots are used in brewing to give beer a peculiar bitterness ("velvet" taste). In Austria, Enzerler vodka is prepared, infused with yellow gentian roots. The bitterness contained in its root stimulates the secretion and motor function of the gastrointestinal tract, improves digestion and assimilation of food.

Gentian has been known as a medicinal plant since ancient times, its roots were used to treat plague, in the Middle Ages - pulmonary tuberculosis and malaria. Currently, gentian yellow is included in the pharmacopoeias of many countries of the world. Plant preparations are used as a means of increasing appetite, with dyspepsia, achilia, and also as a cholagogue in the composition of bitter medicines.

In folk medicine, in addition, the roots were used orally for anacid and hyperacid gastritis, flatulence, liver and gallbladder diseases, as an antihelminthic, for pulmonary tuberculosis, gout, rheumatism, arthritis, allergies, malaria, as an antitussive, for dysentery, jaundice, heartburn. , scurvy; externally - with sweating and as a wound healing.

Gentian is yellow. Interesting plant facts

Gentian yellow

Gentian, due to intensive collection, has become a rare plant and is included in the Red Book of Russia. From the roots of gentian, which are rich in starch and aromatic substances, a special Enzerler vodka is distilled in Austria.

Catholic monasteries in the Middle Ages were engaged not only in divine affairs, but in the manufacture and trade of far from holy things. "Benedictine", "Chartreuse" - these names of liqueurs come from the names of the monasteries in Spain and France, where these drinks were made.

There is an old proverb: do not poke your head into a strange monastery with your charter. Apparently, this proverb did not allow outsiders to interfere in the strange charters of some monasteries. For example, in the Austrian Alps, a young novice (novice monk), entering a monastery, had to bring not knowledge of the "word of God", but ... a certain amount of gentian roots. The guilty monks were sent to the mountains and forests, so that they, in order to atone for their guilt, prepared the roots of gentian.

Gentian yellow

The most famous are: yellow gentian, growing in the Carpathians and the Caucasus, cruciform and common gentian. Gentians are widely known medicinal plants.

In some countries of Western Europe and in the USA, gentian yellow is cultivated. In Ukraine, the natural reserves of gentian are very limited and strictly protected, industrial harvesting is completely prohibited.

Gentian yellow (Gentiana lutea) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the gentian family, used in medicine and cooking. It grows in the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, at altitudes up to 2500 meters above sea level.

Tips for growing, harvesting and storing yellow gentian:

Cultivation:

  • Gentian yellow loves sunny places and well-drained soils. Does not tolerate flooded areas and wetlands.
  • Propagation is carried out by seeds in spring or autumn, as well as by cuttings at the end of summer.
  • After the emergence of sprouts, plants should be planted in beds with a distance of 20-30 cm between plants.
  • Plants are resistant to diseases and pests, but need regular watering.

Workpiece:

  • The collection of roots is carried out during the flowering period in late summer - early autumn.
  • Plants older than three years are selected for harvesting roots. The roots are dug up, cleaned of soil and damaged and small roots are discarded.
  • Next, the roots are thoroughly washed, cut into pieces and dried in the shade at a temperature not exceeding 40-50 degrees until completely dry.

Storage:

  • Ready roots should be stored in dry and ventilated areas in cloth bags or glass jars.
  • Storage should not exceed 2-3 years. After that, the roots lose their medicinal properties.

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Anti-inflammatory drugs help with depression 26.10.2016

It is often said that depression and inflammation are interrelated, that one reinforces the other. But in this case, probably, anti-inflammatory drugs should reduce the symptoms of depression.

Indeed, they do work, but not all. According to the results of the work of researchers from Cambridge, ordinary ibuprofen, for example, will not help here. Inflammation is a highly complex immune response involving many different cells and molecules, including lipids called prostaglandins and proteins called cytokines. The anti-inflammatory properties of ibuprofen lie in the fact that it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins, however, in order to reduce not only inflammation, but also depression, it is necessary to act through cytokines.

The authors analyzed the results of several clinical studies involving more than 2 people treated for various autoimmune disorders. Inflammation, generally speaking, turns on during infection, when something foreign invades the body; however, it happens that the immune system begins to perceive the body's own cells as foreign, so that as a result, organs and tissues are filled with inflammatory signaling molecules synthesized for absolutely no reason.

In autoimmune disorders, they try to suppress such false signals, reduce their strength, which means to reduce the level of the notorious cytokines. In those clinical studies, the goal of the doctors was specifically immune problems, but at the same time during therapy, the general condition of patients was also recorded. Some were given real anti-cytokine drugs, some were given a placebo, and it turned out that those who took the real drugs had markedly reduced symptoms of depression. What's more, anti-inflammatory drugs often helped primarily against depression, while autoimmune symptoms remained unchanged.

It is known from medical practice that conventional antidepressants are the worst at helping those with elevated levels of cytokines, so anti-inflammatory drugs that act on these signaling proteins could save the situation in such cases. However, before letting them into the clinic, it is necessary to conduct special studies to evaluate the antidepressant effect of just such drugs.
