Origin: Europe (Alps, Carpathians, Apennine Peninsula) and Western Asia.

Area: White fir grows in temperate climates, mainly in the mountains.

Chemical composition: The composition of the essential oil of white fir is dominated by alpha-pinene, it also contains limonene, cadinene and borneol.

Economic value: White fir wood is used in construction, production of paper, furniture and other products. White fir is also used as a Christmas decoration and for the production of essential oil.

Myths, legends, symbolism: In Norse mythology, fir was considered a sacred tree, which was associated with the thunder god Thor. According to legend, Thor took refuge under a fir from a thunderstorm, and since then this tree has become a symbol of protection and security. White fir (comb fir, European white fir, European fir)

Species of the genus Fir of the Pine family (Pinaceae).

An evergreen tree up to 30-65 m tall, with a trunk up to 2 meters in diameter.

The crown is sharp-pyramidal in youth, oval-pointed in middle age and blunted above, nest-like, in old age.

The bark is smooth, silver-gray.

Lateral branches are horizontally spread or slightly raised upwards.

The needles are 2-3 cm long, 2-3 mm wide, located on the branches in the same plane, comb-shaped. Blunt or slightly notched at ends. Above dark green, shiny, below two white stripes of stomata.

The plant is monoecious, dioecious.

Young fruit cones are green, mature ones are dark brown, oval-cylindrical, 10-16 cm long, 3-4 cm in diameter. Unlike spruce, they are directed not down, but up. Cones ripen and crumble in the first autumn.

Seeds are large, up to 1 cm long.

The root system is deep, there is a tap root and several strong lateral ones.

Lives up to 300-400 years.

It grows in the Carpathians, Central and Southern Europe.

It is found in the mountain forest and subalpine belt along with European larch (larix decidua), Norway spruce and Rumelian pine and black, Serbian spruce (picea omorika) in the Balkans.

For successful growth, white fir requires fertile, fairly moist soils. Does not tolerate swamping. It does not tolerate dry air and soil. It freezes when the temperature drops below -25 °C.

Shade-tolerant, sensitive to air pollution by smoke and gases.

In decorative terms, it is inferior to Caucasian fir and Siberian fir, as it has looser needles and a trunk that is exposed from below rather early.

The bark and "foot" (coniferous branches) contain essential fir oil (used for medical purposes), and ascorbic acid is also found in the needles.

It is widely cultivated everywhere as an ornamental park plant.

Cultivation:

  • White fir prefers sunny or semi-shady places with fertile soil and moderate moisture.
  • Plant trees in autumn or spring, ensuring sufficient distance between them (about 5-7 meters).
  • Fertilize the trees every year in spring and autumn with mineral fertilizers.

Workpiece:

  • Harvest white fir needles in spring or summer when they are still fresh and juicy.
  • Use only healthy and undamaged branches and needles.
  • Do not collect more than 1/3 of the needles from one tree.

Storage:

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Folding A-bike 08.12.2006

In England, they began to produce a folding bicycle model, called the A-bike for its unfolded shape.

A car weighing 5 kilograms folds in 6 seconds, when folded (dimensions 10 by 67 by 30 cm) is packed into a backpack attached to it and does not interfere with bus, metro, train or plane passengers. Materials - aluminum, fiberglass and composites. The diameter of the wheels is 16 centimeters, so the car is only suitable for city trips on asphalt.

The weight of the rider must not exceed 85 kilograms. On a flat surface, the speed reaches 10 kilometers per hour.
