Names: fr. haricot de Lima, feve Creole, haricot d'Amerique, h. Bonnette (in Algiers), h. de Madagascar; English lima bean, large lima Bean; German Breitschotige lima Bohne, Sichelhulsige Bohne; Swede, lima-bona; it. fagiuolodi lima; Spanish Judia de Lima; apr. porto de manteca.

Lima, like common beans, has bush and curly forms. The latter sometimes reach very high heights (up to 15 m). Lima leaves are shiny, as they are covered with a wax coating.

Flower racemes are many-flowered, with 20-30 flowers. The flowers are small, greenish-white or purple.

The beans are wide, flat, 7-20 cm long, green in the young (removable) state or somewhat colored with anthocyanin. Beans have 2-3 large seeds. Ripe beans crack easily.

Seeds are spherical, moon-shaped or kidney-shaped, with a peculiar radial-striated surface, making them similar to mandarin or orange slices, one-color or two-color, and often one of the colors is located radially. The weight of 1000 seeds varies by variety from 240 to 1150 g.

Like other beans, lima is a thermophilic plant that does not tolerate frost, sowing it is done just before the passage of the last spring frosts.

Short day plant, quite drought and salt tolerant. According to the method of pollination, it is classified as a facultative self-pollinator. With a significant dryness of the air, lima has a significant fall of buds.

It has been noted that lima, compared to common beans, is more resistant to bacterial and viral diseases, is not affected by rust and bean weevil.

Type Ph. lunatus L. is divided into four geographical groups of varieties, which are also divided according to important economic features:

1. Group minor N. Iv. Seeds are spherical, small, with weakly pronounced radiance.

2. Group microspermus N. Iv.

The seeds are flat-elliptical and flat, with a sharp edge, the length of the seed is 12-17 mm. Most cultivars belong to this group, such as Henderson's Bush and Philadelphia.

3. Group macrospermus N. IV.

The seeds are large, flat, the length of the seed is 15-28 mm, the beans are wide.

4. Group major N. IV. The seeds are thick (more than 10 mm). The Fordhoek variety belongs to this group.

On light soils, lima ripens faster than on heavy soils, and on soils rich in nitrogen, its ripening slows down. However, the application of mineral fertilizers accelerates the ripening of lima.

High varieties of lima need substitution of stakes, while the plants are placed in accordance with such feeding areas: between rows 75-90 cm, and in rows 15-30 cm. As for bush lima, it is sown in ribbons or in an ordinary way, like bush beans, with distances between rows and ribbons 40-50 cm, and between lines in ribbons 20-25 cm.

Lima is damaged by bacteriosis. To reduce the damage by bacteriosis, American authors recommend spraying with Bordeaux liquid; the same remedy is also used against downy mildew on lime.

Lima is cultivated in the southern regions of Europe; can successfully grow also in Central Asia, in Transcaucasia, in the North Caucasus and in the south of Ukraine. Lima culture is especially widespread in the United States.

Young, unripe seeds are used for food, which are boiled or canned. Recently, lima freezing has been used.
