Peumus boldo (boldo)

Peumus boldo, or Boldo (Peumus boldus) is the only representative of the monotypic genus of dicotyledonous plants, which is part of the Monimiaceae family.

An evergreen tree up to 7 m high, with a strong spicy smell in all parts; in culture often grows as a bush.

The leaf arrangement is opposite. The leaves are elliptical, rounded at the end, with a wedge-shaped base; the surface of the leaves is somewhat bumpy, covered above and below with bubble-like bulges (papules) bearing bundles of tiny hairs. The petiole is very short.

Flowers dioecious, in short paniculate terminal and axillary inflorescences. Staminate flowers with 10-12 tepals arranged in 2-3 rows, of which the inner ones are more petal-like; stamens many, spirally arranged on the inner surface of the cup-shaped receptacle; anthers open with longitudinal cracks. The pistillate flowers are somewhat smaller than the staminate ones, with few small staminodes and mostly numerous free pistils. The receptacle of pistillate flowers becomes fleshy after flowering.

In nature, the range of the species covers the central regions of Chile and Argentina between 33 and 40 degrees south latitude.

Leaves (Folia Boldo) are used in medicine. The wood is very hard. The bark contains many tannins. Ripe fruits are edible.

The plant contains the isoquinoline alkaloid boldine, which has antitussive activity.

The leaves of the plant, which have a strong woody and slightly camphorous aroma, are used in South American countries for culinary purposes as a seasoning and for making herbal tea.

For the treatment of digestive disorders: Steep 1 teaspoon dried boldo leaves in 1 cup boiling water. Steep for 10-15 minutes, then strain. Take 1/2 cup of the infusion 2-3 times daily to improve digestion and reduce symptoms of indigestion.

Soothing Face Cream: Mix 1 teaspoon shea butter and 1/2 teaspoon boldo oil, add a few drops of lavender essential oil. This cream will help moisturize and soothe the skin.

A team of German scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research and the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich have developed a touch display that works without direct touch on its glass.

The principle of operation of the display is based on the use of humidity sensors, which are able to record the change in air humidity caused by the human body. From the surface of the human skin there is a constant evaporation of moisture, which is secreted by the sweat glands.

Sensors detect changes in air humidity in the vicinity of the display and change their resistance. Based on the change in the resistance of several sensors, the control module calculates the position of the fingers in space.

To measure humidity, the display uses sensors based on antimony phosphate, which is in a crystalline state at room temperature. With an increase in the moisture content of phosphatoantimony acid, its electrical conductivity increases.

As it saturates with moisture, the chemical changes color to iridescent or pearlescent, clearly demonstrating which area of the screen a person is affecting. The display consists of a dozen nanometer-thick layers of phosphatoantimony acid, as well as silicon dioxide or titanium dioxide, which alternate with each other.

The thickness of the screen is about a thousandth of a millimeter, and the speed of the sensors reaches several milliseconds. Now German scientists intend to develop methods to protect the display from damage and chemical attack.
