Lumber for construction on a suburban area is always a concern, and sometimes a problem. At the same time, when clearing the area allocated for the house, cut down trees are not such a rarity; at best they go for firewood. I want to share my experience of a more reasonable use of such a damp forest - dissolving it into boards or timber.

On ordinary circular saws, which are sold in stores, you cannot process a six-meter log - you can’t even move it, and a saw blade with a diameter of about 500 mm is required. Of course, it is easier to move not a log, but a “circular” along some guides, while maintaining their preferred relative position: a log from above - a saw from the side from below.

It is easy to make a saw blade of the required diameter from a steel or duralumin sheet 3 mm thick. Oddly enough, but only one or three teeth are enough for him, while the engine power should be 1 or 2 kW, respectively.

The design of the guide is selected depending on the material at hand. The simplest option: a log is taken and processed from above and from the sides with an ax and a planer. In the girth of the processed surfaces of the log, a U-shaped saddle (like a caliper) is knocked together from the boards - and the guide is ready. An engine with a saw blade or a "circular" is attached to the saddle.

The most important and, perhaps, the most difficult thing is the cutter tooth. It is made separately from the disk, this requires a bench tool and a sharpener. The cutter must be made of high-speed steel (samokala) with a cutting angle of 30° and clearance angles of at least 15°. It can be machined from a broken drill or from a carbide plate such as a glass cutter roller.

The tooth should only cut. Although careful balancing of the disc is not necessary, it is still unacceptable to rub it against the walls of the cut.

Particular attention is given to safety precautions. A protective shield is made from a sheet of plywood somewhat larger than the disk. Behind the disk, a spacer knife is attached to the caliper (view A). The disk itself is mounted tightly on the axle, but not tightly - it is necessary to leave it the opportunity to turn under an accidental shock load. The caliper is fed forward by a dry stick pusher, smoothly and without jerks. Work should be in glasses, and to the place of work - do not let outsiders.

I will give the technical data of my saw. Her engine is a three-phase power of 1,7 kW at 3000 rpm, with capacitors. The outer diameter of the disk - 520 mm; mandrels - 50 mm. I installed three teeth with VK8 plates on the disc - for better balancing. The length of the guide log - 7 m; the ribs are reinforced with corners. Productivity - two six-meter beams per hour or 4 m2 of boards of excellent quality.
