Strychnos poisonous, Strychnos toxifera. Photos of the plant, basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Strychnosus Strychnosus

Basic scientific information, legends, myths, symbolism

Sort by: Strychnos

Family: Loganiaceae (Loganiaceae)

Origin: Africa, Asia, Australia and America.

Area: South America

Chemical composition: Strychnos venom contains alkaloids such as strychnine and brucine, which are poisonous.

Economic value: Strychnos venom is used in medicine as an analgesic and muscle relaxant, and is also used in poisonous fishing baits. However, due to its high toxicity, it is not recommended for use without medical prescription or special training.

Myths, legends, symbolism: In the legends and mythology associated with strychnos, its poisonousness was commonly used to create poison arrows and poisonous cocktails. In ancient Roman mythology, strychnos was associated with the goddess of the cross, Feronia, who was the goddess of sowing and winemaking. It was believed that she bestowed knowledge on the use of strychnos to create poisons and medicines. In modern symbolism, strychnos is sometimes associated with danger, death, and toxicity.

Strychnosus

Poisonous strychnos is a climbing plant, a species of the genus Strychnos of the Loganiaceae family.

Liana, the shoots of which are covered with rough brown bark. The plant is characterized by paired leaves with very short pedicels, growing on round, pubescent, rusty-brown twigs. The length of these leathery shiny oblong leaves reaches 7,5 cm. The flowers are white, very fragrant. After flowering, a fruit is formed - a yellow berry.

Grows in South America.

Poison (curare stored in calabash pots) is obtained from the roots and stems of this particular plant. The toxic alkaloids of Strychnos toxifera are strychnine and brucine.

Strychnine inhibits the action of the enzyme cholinesterase, resulting in muscle and respiratory paralysis. Brucine causes a strong heartbeat, which soon reaches critical values, leading to complete cardiac arrest. Such symptoms are observed when toxic substances enter the blood.

Strychnine, obtained from seeds and taken orally, acts a little differently: first, it causes an increase in the secretion of gastric juice, then, getting into the intestines, it is quickly absorbed and has a characteristic effect on the central nervous system, expressed in excitation of the vagus nerve, as a result of which breathing becomes deeper and the heart rate slows down.

This toxic effect of strychnine causes an increase in adrenaline levels, which causes stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, which, in turn, can lead to a rapid increase in blood pressure and sudden cardiac arrest. Death occurs in terrible convulsions arising from the simultaneous stimulation of the motor and sensory nodes of the spinal cord. The symptoms of death from strychnine poisoning are very similar to those of death from tetanus.

Energy from space for Starship 08.05.2024

Producing solar energy in space is becoming more feasible with the advent of new technologies and the development of space programs. The head of the startup Virtus Solis shared his vision of using SpaceX's Starship to create orbital power plants capable of powering the Earth. Startup Virtus Solis has unveiled an ambitious project to create orbital power plants using SpaceX's Starship. This idea could significantly change the field of solar energy production, making it more accessible and cheaper. The core of the startup's plan is to reduce the cost of launching satellites into space using Starship. This technological breakthrough is expected to make solar energy production in space more competitive with traditional energy sources. Virtual Solis plans to build large photovoltaic panels in orbit, using Starship to deliver the necessary equipment. However, one of the key challenges ... >>

New method for creating powerful batteries 08.05.2024

With the development of technology and the expanding use of electronics, the issue of creating efficient and safe energy sources is becoming increasingly urgent. Researchers at the University of Queensland have unveiled a new approach to creating high-power zinc-based batteries that could change the landscape of the energy industry. One of the main problems with traditional water-based rechargeable batteries was their low voltage, which limited their use in modern devices. But thanks to a new method developed by scientists, this drawback has been successfully overcome. As part of their research, scientists turned to a special organic compound - catechol. It turned out to be an important component that can improve battery stability and increase its efficiency. This approach has led to a significant increase in the voltage of zinc-ion batteries, making them more competitive. According to scientists, such batteries have several advantages. They have b ... >>

Alcohol content of warm beer 07.05.2024

Beer, as one of the most common alcoholic drinks, has its own unique taste, which can change depending on the temperature of consumption. A new study by an international team of scientists has found that beer temperature has a significant impact on the perception of alcoholic taste. The study, led by materials scientist Lei Jiang, found that at different temperatures, ethanol and water molecules form different types of clusters, which affects the perception of alcoholic taste. At low temperatures, more pyramid-like clusters form, which reduces the pungency of the "ethanol" taste and makes the drink taste less alcoholic. On the contrary, as the temperature increases, the clusters become more chain-like, resulting in a more pronounced alcoholic taste. This explains why the taste of some alcoholic drinks, such as baijiu, can change depending on temperature. The data obtained opens up new prospects for beverage manufacturers, ... >>

Thermoelectric generator using human heat 19.02.2013

Fujifilm has introduced a high-performance thermoelectric converter based on organic materials. The new thermoelectric generator opens up wide opportunities for autonomous power supply of promising mobile devices with low power consumption.

The dimensionless coefficient of performance (ZT) of the new thermoelectric generator is 0,27, but Fujifilm claims that the actual performance is higher. At an exhibition recently held in Tokyo, a prototype thermoelectric converter demonstrated a power of several milliwatts. At the same time, the novelty can generate electricity even from a temperature difference of 1 degree Celsius.

Fujifilm does not disclose details about the manufacturing technology and composition of the organic material from which the new type of thermoelectric generator is made. It is only noted that it was created on the basis of the developments of the Japanese AIST Institute. Specialists from this institution in 2011 developed a technology for printing thermoelectric devices on flexible substrates such as plastic films and paper. In this case, a composite material was used, consisting of carbon sputtered on a polymer matrix. This material, made at the nanoscale, is capable of generating 1,5 times more power than conventional printed counterparts. So, during the experiments, the difference between the temperature of the hand and the temperature in the room (36 and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively) made it possible to generate a current with a voltage of 108,9 mV.

Fujifilm hopes that the new thermoelectric technology will power various sensors placed on the human body, including medical and environmental sensors. In addition, low-cost organic thermoelectric modules can be used to improve the efficiency of solar panels, vehicles, mobile device charging and low-power automation.
