Head injury may vary in severity. They are determined not by external signs (the size of the "bump" or bruise), as parents often think, but by the condition of the child. Common head injury symptoms sometimes appear immediately, but sometimes take hours to develop. If the child has fallen and hit his head, complains of weakness, nausea, dizziness or faints, vomiting is observed, then this is most likely a traumatic brain injury. The child needs to see a doctor immediately.

If the necessary treatment is not carried out even with the slightest concussion, the baby may later develop regular migraines, dizziness and fainting.

Head injury symptoms

Minor head injury

A bump or abrasion on the head.

A short acute period with vomiting, loss of consciousness, confusion or double vision.

Sometimes drowsiness within 1-2 hours.

Severe head injury

A bump or abrasion on the head.

Indomitable vomiting, prolonged loss of consciousness, memory loss, confusion, double vision, drowsiness, convulsions.

Clear or bloody discharge from the nose.

Inability to answer simple questions, follow directions, and move uninjured body parts.

When to see a doctor

If your child has any of the common symptoms of a severe head injury, call emergency services.

If your child has symptoms of a mild head injury, see a doctor.

First aid

1. Put the child to bed and call an ambulance.

2. Apply ice to the child's head by wrapping it in a towel (if ice is applied directly to the skin, it may cause frostbite), or a cold compress.

3. When bleeding, apply a sterile dressing that will prevent infection and stop the bleeding. If blood has seeped through the tissue, do not remove the tissue from the wound so as not to interfere with the formation of a blood clot. Lay another piece of fabric over the first piece. If you suspect a child has a skull fracture, do not apply direct pressure to the bleeding head wound.

4. If the wound on the head is not deep, cut the hair around the wound, wash it with warm soapy water and dry it gently.

5. Do not leave your child even for a minute. Check the basic vital functions - respiratory tract, respiration and circulation. And, if necessary, take on artificial respiration, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or bleeding control.

6. If the child is vomiting and there is no reason to suspect a spinal injury, turn the child's head to the side so that he does not suffocate.

7. If you suspect a spinal injury, call a few helpers. Trying to keep the head, neck and back in a straight line, turn the child on its side.

8. If the injury is mild and there is no wound, then monitor the child's condition for 12-24 hours so as not to miss the development of a severe head injury.

ATTENTION!

If the child has lost consciousness, in no case should you try to sit or put him on his feet, pick him up or slap his cheeks to bring him to his senses. Do not shake or lift the child. Do not remove any objects stuck in the wound or protruding from the skull.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

The character of a dog does not depend on the breed 16.01.2024

American scientists conducted a study in which the genomes of more than 2 thousand dogs were studied and published the results of their observations. The main conclusion of the study is that breed is not a determining factor in shaping a pet’s character, including its aggressiveness and tendency to obey the owner’s commands.

“Our analysis of the opinions of dog owners and the genomes of their pets showed that belonging to certain breeds explains only 9% of the variability in their behavior. This indicates that the characteristic behavioral traits of dogs were formed randomly during the evolution of their ancestors long before the advent of modern decorative dogs. varieties," the scientists note.

There are more than three hundred officially recognized dog breeds on the planet, but only a small number have been bred to perform specific tasks. Most breeds have appeared in the last three hundred years as ornamental varieties. In determining the breed of a dog, its exterior, appearance and similarity to “reference samples” play a major role. However, for owners, the character and behavior of their pet is more important: aggressiveness towards strangers and devotion to its owner.

A team of geneticists led by Professor Elinora Carlson from the University of Massachusetts at Worcester has found clear evidence that dogs' behavior has little to do with their breed. During the study, the genomes of 2,1 thousand dogs representing 78 breeds were deciphered. In addition, scientists conducted surveys among owners aimed at assessing eight key character traits of dogs.

Geneticists have identified 11 DNA sections that significantly affect the behavior of dogs, but are not associated with specific breeds. Further analysis of genomes and survey results showed that breed did not play a decisive role in shaping the character of both purebreds and mixed breeds of different breeds.

Belonging to a breed explained only about 9% of the behavior of pets. The remaining more than 90% of the variation in their character is due to mutations in genes passed on by individual dogs from their ancestors.

Research shows that dogs' personalities are largely determined by genetic factors unrelated to their breed. These results are important for understanding the behavioral characteristics of dogs and making adjustments to the upbringing and training of animals.
