Giardiasis - this disease affects the digestive tract (duodenum and upper small intestine), in which the protozoan organisms - giardia parasitize. Pathogens enter the child's oral cavity through drinking water, dirty hands, unwashed vegetables and fruits. Giardia secrete toxic substances that lead to the development of chronic intoxication, as well as mechanical irritation of the intestine.

Giardiasis is most common in children aged 5-10 years. The disease can cause serious complications: a decrease in the body weight of a child, a slowdown in its growth, a decrease in immunity, the development of anemia of various degrees of severity, the appearance of infectious diseases, and even an abscess (suppuration) of the intestinal mucosa or liver.

To establish the diagnosis, the child must pass the feces for analysis. Sometimes duodenal sounding is performed.

Treatment is prescribed only by a doctor. Doses of drugs depend on the age and weight of the child. The duration of treatment is also chosen by the doctor, because there are different treatment regimens.

For example: taking medicines - 5 days, a break - 5 days, the second course of treatment - 5 days. It is also necessary to normalize the motility of the biliary tract and the microflora of the large intestine, therefore Giardiasis cannot be treated on its own.

The development of the disease can be acute, subacute and chronic.

Symptoms of the disease

The acute course resembles acute gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and small intestine). This is the appearance of frequent yellow, watery, frothy stools with a sour smell, 5-8 times a day.

In the subacute and chronic course of the disease, its manifestations are associated with dyskinesia (dysmotility) of the biliary tract. Characterized by pain in the abdomen without a clear localization. Most children point to the umbilical region, as well as the right hypochondrium. The pain may be paroxysmal, aching.

Dyspeptic syndrome is characterized by persistent nausea, loss of appetite or its absence, and sometimes vomiting.

Intoxication syndrome is manifested by pallor of the skin, cyanosis under the eyes, icterus around the mouth, headache, fatigue, irritability, emotional lability, general weakness.

Emergency care is not required, except in nursing infants who develop similar symptoms.

When to see a doctor

If a child has loose, watery stools for a day.

If the child is worried about abdominal pain.

What to do before the doctor arrives

1. Provide your child with a sparing diet (steam and boiled vegetables and meat, cereals, jelly, fermented milk products).

2. Give your child mineral water without gas.

3. Give activated charcoal (2-5 tablets depending on age).

Prevention consists in the elementary rules of hygiene: wash your hands before eating, do not eat unwashed fruits and vegetables, etc.

Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Petgugu Global cat litter 15.04.2024

Taking care of pets can often be a challenge, especially when it comes to keeping your home clean. A new interesting solution from the Petgugu Global startup has been presented, which will make life easier for cat owners and help them keep their home perfectly clean and tidy. Startup Petgugu Global has unveiled a unique cat toilet that can automatically flush feces, keeping your home clean and fresh. This innovative device is equipped with various smart sensors that monitor your pet's toilet activity and activate to automatically clean after use. The device connects to the sewer system and ensures efficient waste removal without the need for intervention from the owner. Additionally, the toilet has a large flushable storage capacity, making it ideal for multi-cat households. The Petgugu cat litter bowl is designed for use with water-soluble litters and offers a range of additional ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

3D printing of chocolate desserts 19.12.2019

Scientists from the Singapore University of Technology and Design have developed a special compound for 3D printing chocolate desserts at room temperature.

This is not the first time 3D printers have been used to make desserts with chocolate, but the printing process in this case is carried out by extruding the melted chocolate mass, for which the composition must be heated to 31-36 degrees. Although this process is relatively simple, it requires maintaining a high temperature and precise control over it.

Cold extrusion is easier, but this method requires fluid and viscous compositions, for which it is necessary to add components to chocolate that change its characteristics. Only now has it been possible to find suitable combinations that work at room temperature. Singapore scientists used commercially available chocolate products by mixing various pastes and syrups with 10-15% cocoa powder. The final composition called Ci3DP (Chocolate-based ink 3D-Printing) turned out to be pasty: in various versions, its dynamic viscosity ranged from 100 to 10000 Pas.

A material with such rheological properties is suitable for cold extrusion at room temperature. Desserts of the most complex forms were printed from it, including those with hard and soft layers, as well as with liquid filling. In the future, a similar method may find application for 3D printing other dishes from various temperature-sensitive components.
