Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Electrical brain stimulation and creativity 20.04.2016

How to overcome creative block? How to find inspiration? Scientists unexpectedly answered this question: it is necessary to shake the brain with an electric discharge.

The question of what defines creativity has been on the minds of both scientists and creative workers alike ever since people started creating things. A new study takes a completely different look at the old problem of muse and creative inspiration: it turns out that creativity is a state of mind that a person can achieve in a fairly simple way, namely, by sending electrical discharges directly to the brain.

To create an electrical current, a team from Georgetown University used transcranial DC stimulation. This is a non-invasive, painless procedure in which two electrodes are placed on a person's head and direct current is passed through the brain. When discussing this kind of stimulation, it is often said that it can help with various neuropsychological conditions, such as depression, anxiety, Parkinson's disease, and chronic pain. But psychology professor Adam Green and cognitive neuroscientist Peter Turkeltaub used the technique to stimulate the anterior lobes of the brain, the part that is responsible for the creative process.

Despite the results, Greene and Terkeltaub warn against being overly optimistic about direct current stimulation, and Greene notes that "attempts to use electrical current for brain stimulation outside of the laboratory or clinic can be extremely dangerous." But, of course, this does not stop people from using such stimulation in everyday conditions. For example, a company called Pavloc is currently selling a device that the company claims will help “break bad habits in five days” with a mild electric shock. If Pavloc has many clients, it will only be a matter of time before people start looking for inspiration through electrical stimulation, although the full mechanisms of its action have not yet been studied.
