Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

The attractiveness of caring men 14.04.2024

The stereotype that women prefer "bad boys" has long been widespread. However, recent research conducted by British scientists from Monash University offers a new perspective on this issue. They looked at how women responded to men's emotional responsibility and willingness to help others. The study's findings could change our understanding of what makes men attractive to women. A study conducted by scientists from Monash University leads to new findings about men's attractiveness to women. In the experiment, women were shown photographs of men with brief stories about their behavior in various situations, including their reaction to an encounter with a homeless person. Some of the men ignored the homeless man, while others helped him, such as buying him food. A study found that men who showed empathy and kindness were more attractive to women compared to men who showed empathy and kindness. ... >>

Coffee grounds for road construction 21.05.2016

Every year, millions of coffee houses throw millions of tons of dormant coffee into the trash, which is an insoluble material rich in organic compounds. In this regard, the efforts of scientists are aimed at finding a use for this waste. Projects already underway include the use of coffee as a fuel through the gasification of biomass or the extraction of oils from coffee, which make up up to 20% of the solid mass of waste, as well as for filters that capture carbon released into the atmosphere.

A new approach to the use of used coffee was recently proposed by scientists from the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne (Australia), who turned waste into a geopolymer - a monolithic building material formed as a result of interaction in an alkaline environment of components (including those) of geological origin. To do this, the researchers added slag in a ratio of 7:3 and solutions of sodium metasilicate and sodium hydroxide to the used coffee, and then pressed the mass into cylindrical blocks. The tests carried out showed that the resulting material has sufficient strength to be used as a soil base in the construction of roads.

According to researchers, coffee waste produced in restaurants and cafes in Melbourne (population 5 million) is enough to build 5 km of roads annually. Scientists see a double benefit in this use of coffee. Firstly, public catering enterprises will not have to pay for the disposal of waste, which is now taken to a landfill; secondly, environmental damage will be reduced by reducing the need to develop new quarries for building materials.
