1. General requirements for labor protection

General labor protection requirements are set out in the instructions "General requirements for labor protection for workers engaged in logging and forestry work".

2. Safety requirements before starting work

2.1. Check the completeness and serviceability of work clothes, safety shoes and safety devices, put them on and make sure that the protection is reliable and the possibility of freedom of movement during work.

2.2. Check the availability and serviceability of equipment, harness, protective devices for animals, dress them and adjust them to the location and size.

2.3. The foreman must warn workers about obstinate and nervous horses; their care must be entrusted to the most qualified workers.

2.4. Before leaving for work, the foreman or senior groom, together with the driver, must check the serviceability of the rolling stock, harness, the availability and quality of auxiliary equipment, and horse shoes. Particular attention must be paid to fastening the wheels and pinning the pin. Riding horses in a harness with faulty harness, without a harness and the necessary tools is not permitted. Working horses are assigned personally to each groom and rider.

3. Requirements for safety during work

3.1. Horses are kept in a specially equipped room (stable), with a fence around stalls and other necessary premises, equipped with fire-fighting equipment. The premises must have spacious passages that provide the possibility of convenient, safe servicing of horses.

3.2. During the mating period, stud stallions are kept in stalls uninhibited. Each stallion must have a halter with a pick-up ring. Each stud stallion is provided with a set of strong leashes with carabiners and bridles with simple bits and reins.

3.3. To bring out stallions and obstinate horses, special bridles and strong lead-out leashes with a length of at least 2 m should be used; two grooms use the leashes to lead out the horse. When taking out for mating, the length of the harness is at least 5 m; during mating, a breeding harness is put on the mare; it is prohibited to take breeding stallions and mares out for walks at the same time.

3.4. When cleaning, the horse is firmly tied with a chombur to a hitching post or a ring in the wall, and the obstinate one is tied to the loose ends.

3.5. Trimming hooves and shoeing horses is entrusted to a farrier with special training; this work is carried out on machines and stalls in the presence of an assigned groom. The presence of strangers is prohibited. The blacksmith is provided with a canvas apron and mittens; knives and hoof pliers are stored in a personal box.

3.6. It is necessary to bathe horses in previously surveyed places, with a calm current, a flat bottom, without deep holes and whirlpools; workers must be able to swim well.

3.7. If it is necessary to fell a horse for processing, choose a flat place free from foreign objects; at least four people participate in the felling under the supervision of a veterinarian or livestock specialist; when processing the horse, people should be on the side of its back. Zootechnical and veterinary treatment of adult horses and young herds must be carried out in splits.

3.8. To feed restless horses, special feeders are equipped with feed distributed from the side of the aisle, without entering the stall.

3.9. To herd horses at night, as well as in the event of a snowstorm, at least two herd keepers are appointed; servicing the herd on neighboring horses is prohibited; the herd keeper uses a Cossack style saddle, equipped with two girths and a saddle line. Horses for grazing are placed in a circle or in a straight line at a distance of 0,5 km and no closer than 0,5 km from the roads.

3.10. Horse-drawn transport should, if possible, be individualized for each horse. Horses are allowed to be harnessed only to serviceable carts and agricultural implements, when working in mountainous conditions, equipped with brake devices, as well as a seat located at a safe distance from the horse’s hind leg.

3.11. Harnessed horses must not be left unattended, even during short stops.

3.12. Only calm horses are allocated for traveling in areas of heavy traffic. Riding shy horses without eye pads is not allowed; horses must have all their legs shod.

3.13. When moving horse-drawn vehicles on the plain, a gap of 2 m must be maintained (on ice - 5 m), on a descent - the entire length, on steep slopes - with braking, in these cases people must leave the cart.

3.14. The movement of horse-drawn vehicles on rivers and lakes is prohibited when the ice thickness is less than 15 cm, as well as in the spring when cracks appear, as well as closer than 10 m from the ice hole.

3.15. Heavy materials, timber and large-sized loads are tied with a cable, chain or rope, secured with racks or wedges. It is not allowed to leave a horse without control on slopes, railway crossings and dangerous places.

3.16. It is prohibited to establish a parking lot, as well as loading timber and performing other types of work closer than 50 m from the felling of timber.

4. Safety requirements in emergency situations

4.1. Stop work in case of wind speeds exceeding 11 m/s, dense fog, heavy snowfall (visibility less than 50 m), and take shelter in a safe place until the situation improves.

4.2. During a thunderstorm, stop moving, take a safe place in a clearing, an area of deciduous young growth, between trees growing at a distance of 20 m from each other, in mountains, hilly areas closer to the middle of the slope, if possible, sit on insulating material (dry dead wood, moss, birch bark), remove metal objects and mechanisms from yourself and horses, keep horses on a leash.

It is prohibited during a thunderstorm: to be in motion, on the top of a mountain, hill, at the edge of a forest; stop at streams, rivers, lakes; hide under isolated trees, rocks, stones, lean against them; be located near and under power lines, triangulation signs, other towers and signs, closer than 10 m from machines and mechanisms.

4.3. If a forest fire occurs, take measures to extinguish it on your own, and, if possible, provide information to the forestry enterprise, forestry department or other organization, enterprise, or population. If it is impossible to extinguish the fire, take measures for personal safety and the safety of horses and leave the fire site.

Do the same in case of any other danger (environmental, radiation, chemical hazard, natural disaster) that threatens people's lives.

4.4. In the event of an accident, provide the victim with first aid (self-help), if necessary, take measures to deliver him to a medical facility, if possible preserve the situation of the incident, and report the incident to the administration.

5. Safety requirements at the end of work

5.1. Clean, put in order tools, equipment, gear, vehicles, and place them for storage in designated areas. Unload and unbridle the horses and place them to rest.

5.2. Remove uniforms, overalls and safety shoes, harness from the horse, clean and free from dust, and place in storage.

5.3. Make sure there is no encephalitis tick; if present, remove it; the same applies to horses.

5.4. Perform hygienic procedures, when working in the zone of radiation contamination, perform the prescribed procedures.

5.5. Report all comments on the work to the foreman (official) and enter them in the journal of administrative and public control on labor protection.

5.6. Extinguish the fires, sprinkle them with soil.

Crumpled graphene for artificial muscles 26.01.2013

To control wrinkling on the monatomic carbon, the scientists used a pre-stretched polymer substrate. A sheet of graphene was first applied to such a substrate and then allowed to shrink. At the same time, part of the carbon atoms in graphene remained bound to the polymer, and those that were in the gaps had to form folds.

Scientists managed to ensure that the folds had a very small characteristic size - within a few nanometers. The authors showed that such a surface has some unusual properties. For example, it, like crystalline surfaces with a similar structure, is extremely water-repellent.

Another unusual property of crumpled graphene is that when current is passed through it, it expands. The authors used this property of the material to create microscopic motors - electrical "muscles" that stretch when tense and, on the contrary, contract when relaxed.

Graphene is one of the allotropic modifications of carbon, along with diamond and graphite. In fact, it is one of the flat layers of carbon atoms collected in graphite in loosely bound stacks. Graphene has high strength and electrical conductivity and is recognized as one of the most promising materials for future electronics.
