Battery as part of the body 30.03.2021

Scientists have come up with a battery cell that does not add extra weight to the car, as it is a component of the body.

Batteries add quite a lot of extra mass to electric vehicles. But scientists have found a way to fix this: they have created a battery that can simultaneously be part of the body of a car.

Heavy and bulky batteries are one of the main factors limiting the freedom of movement of electric vehicles - airplanes, cars and drones. Researchers around the world are working to create batteries with the highest possible energy storage density.

In 2018, scientists at Chalmers University of Technology published a study that described a new type of carbon fiber with the right arrangement of crystals. This fiber combined the high rigidity required for use as a structural material in an automobile with the ability to store an electrical charge.

Now, these same researchers have constructed an entire battery from carbon fiber that is 10 times more efficient than its counterparts. The battery consists of a negative electrode made of carbon fiber and a positive electrode made of aluminum foil coated with lithium iron phosphate. The electrodes are separated by a glass fiber layer, which serves as the structural matrix of the electrolyte. This layer simultaneously allows lithium ions to move between the electrodes, as in a conventional battery, and helps to distribute the mechanical load to various parts of the structure.

The researchers call their development a "massless" energy storage device because, unlike a conventional battery, it does not add mass to the vehicle. At least in theory. Undoubtedly, this is a big plus of the technology, but its application requires some compromises. For example, the energy storage density of such a battery is 24 Wh / kg - about 5 times less than existing lithium-ion batteries. But such structural materials can be used in conjunction with conventional batteries, which will increase the mileage of the car on a single charge.
