Artificial leather for touch emulation 15.04.2024

In a modern technology world where distance is becoming increasingly commonplace, maintaining connection and a sense of closeness is important. Recent developments in artificial skin by German scientists from Saarland University represent a new era in virtual interactions. German researchers from Saarland University have developed ultra-thin films that can transmit the sensation of touch over a distance. This cutting-edge technology provides new opportunities for virtual communication, especially for those who find themselves far from their loved ones. The ultra-thin films developed by the researchers, just 50 micrometers thick, can be integrated into textiles and worn like a second skin. These films act as sensors that recognize tactile signals from mom or dad, and as actuators that transmit these movements to the baby. Parents' touch to the fabric activates sensors that react to pressure and deform the ultra-thin film. This ... >>

Plant Pore Control 10.07.2021

Scientists from the Julius Maximilian University (JMU) of Würzburg have found a way to remotely control the pores on plant leaves using light pulses.

Plants have small pores on the surface of their leaves called stomata. They help plants regulate the supply of carbon dioxide for photosynthesis. They also prevent too much water loss and wilting during drought.

The stomatal pores are surrounded by two protective cells. If the internal pressure of these cells drops, they weaken and close the pores. If the pressure rises, the cells move apart and the pores expand. Thus, the movements of the stomata are regulated by protective cells. The signaling pathways in these cells are so complex that it is difficult to influence their work directly.

However, the researchers managed to do this by introducing a light-sensitive switch into the defense cells of tobacco plants. This technology was borrowed from optogenetics. It has been successfully used in animal cells, but its use in plant cells has not yet been realized.

The scientists used a light-sensitive protein from the algae Guillardia theta as a light switch, namely the ACR1 anion channel from the canalrhodopsin group. In response to light pulses, the switch acts on the protective cells of the stomata, they lose internal pressure, weaken, and the pores close within 15 minutes.

By gaining the ability to control plant pores, it is possible to grow cultures with an increased number of anion channels in protective cells. Plants so equipped should close their stomata more quickly in response to upcoming periods of hot weather and thus better cope with periods of drought.
