To the fire started, combustion of combustible substances should begin.

Combustion is an oxidation reaction accompanied by the release of energy in the form of heat and light. This reaction takes place in the gas phase. Different substances have different flammability; this ability is determined, firstly, by their ability to oxidize, and secondly, to be in the gas phase (for liquids, this is the ability to evaporate, for solids, to sublimate).

The most common oxidizing agent is atmospheric oxygen, which under normal conditions is everywhere and everywhere where air penetrates. Therefore, the most important fire safety measures are measures to prevent the contact of combustible substances, especially volatile combustible liquids, with air, i.e. the formation of a combustible environment.

In order for combustion to begin, an ignition source with a certain energy is needed. Therefore, fire prevention must be achieved not only by preventing the formation of a combustible environment, but also (or) preventing the formation of sources of ignition in a combustible environment (or introduction into it). Ignition sources are divided into open fire, heat of heating elements and devices, electrical energy, energy of mechanical sparks, static electricity and lightning discharges, energy of self-heating processes of substances and materials (spontaneous combustion), etc.

In any production and in any organization, special attention should be paid to identifying existing and potential sources of ignition. The most common source of ignition is an open fire, such as during welding, or overheating of faulty electrical wiring.

In addition to ignition under the influence of external sources, spontaneous combustion is possible. Spontaneous combustion can be thermal, chemical and microbiological. Thermal spontaneous combustion is expressed in the accumulation of heat by the material, during which spontaneous combustion of materials occurs. The self-heating temperature of a substance is an indicator of fire hazard. For most combustible materials, this indicator lies in the range from 80 to 150 ° C: for paper - 100 ° C; construction felt - 80°С; pine wood - 80°С.

Chemical spontaneous combustion manifests itself immediately in fiery combustion. For organic substances, this type of spontaneous combustion occurs upon contact with acids. Note that some inorganic substances are capable of spontaneous combustion upon contact with water (for example, sodium hydrogen sulfate).

Microbiological spontaneous combustion is associated with the release of thermal energy by microorganisms in the process of life in a nutrient medium for them (hay, peat, sawdust, etc.).

Depending on the type of combustible material, fires are divided into classes: А - fires of solid combustible substances and materials; В - fires of combustible liquids or melting solids and materials; С - gas fires; D - metal fires; Е - fires of combustible substances and materials of electrical installations under voltage; F - fires of nuclear materials, radioactive waste, radioactive substances.

Machine for thinning flowers in gardens 02.05.2024

In modern agriculture, technological progress is developing aimed at increasing the efficiency of plant care processes. The innovative Florix flower thinning machine was presented in Italy, designed to optimize the harvesting stage. This tool is equipped with mobile arms, allowing it to be easily adapted to the needs of the garden. The operator can adjust the speed of the thin wires by controlling them from the tractor cab using a joystick. This approach significantly increases the efficiency of the flower thinning process, providing the possibility of individual adjustment to the specific conditions of the garden, as well as the variety and type of fruit grown in it. After testing the Florix machine for two years on various types of fruit, the results were very encouraging. Farmers such as Filiberto Montanari, who has used a Florix machine for several years, have reported a significant reduction in the time and labor required to thin flowers. ... >>

Advanced Infrared Microscope 02.05.2024

Microscopes play an important role in scientific research, allowing scientists to delve into structures and processes invisible to the eye. However, various microscopy methods have their limitations, and among them was the limitation of resolution when using the infrared range. But the latest achievements of Japanese researchers from the University of Tokyo open up new prospects for studying the microworld. Scientists from the University of Tokyo have unveiled a new microscope that will revolutionize the capabilities of infrared microscopy. This advanced instrument allows you to see the internal structures of living bacteria with amazing clarity on the nanometer scale. Typically, mid-infrared microscopes are limited by low resolution, but the latest development from Japanese researchers overcomes these limitations. According to scientists, the developed microscope allows creating images with a resolution of up to 120 nanometers, which is 30 times higher than the resolution of traditional microscopes. ... >>

Air trap for insects 01.05.2024

Agriculture is one of the key sectors of the economy, and pest control is an integral part of this process. A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Potato Research Institute (ICAR-CPRI), Shimla, has come up with an innovative solution to this problem - a wind-powered insect air trap. This device addresses the shortcomings of traditional pest control methods by providing real-time insect population data. The trap is powered entirely by wind energy, making it an environmentally friendly solution that requires no power. Its unique design allows monitoring of both harmful and beneficial insects, providing a complete overview of the population in any agricultural area. “By assessing target pests at the right time, we can take necessary measures to control both pests and diseases,” says Kapil ... >>

Pacemaker working from the heart 20.06.2017

A variety of miniature medical devices have long been used in everyday clinical practice: these are all kinds of sensors that read certain physiological parameters, these are devices with drugs that release their drug filling in accordance with a certain schedule, these are tiny electronic pacemakers that help the heart work right.

Among pacemakers, there have long been wireless models that operate on their own battery, and in themselves such devices have become so small that they are inserted into the wall of the heart muscle using a catheter through a vein, without any major surgical intervention.

But any power source is depleted sooner or later, but removing the pacemaker will not work so easily - scarring begins around it, so that the device is, as it were, sealed in the heart. Of course, the battery lasts quite a long time, but after a few years the pacemaker still stops working, and you need to put in a new one, so in the end, according to M. Amin Karami from the University of Buffalo, the heart turns into a small graveyard of pacemakers.

Scientists propose to use a device that would collect the energy of heart contractions as a power source for the pacemaker. We are talking about a piezoelectric element: as you know, piezoelectric crystals generate an electric current when compressed.

A piezo element can be mounted on a vibrating motor or even on a bridge that cars are constantly walking on, it is used to turn mechanical vibrations into electricity. But in the same way, regular contractions and expansions of the heart muscle can be used. True, different people have different heart rates, but according to the researchers, their battery can work with a wide range of frequencies.

Now the piezoelectric element is to be combined with the actual pacemaker. Ultimately, the device as a whole must be as small as conventional pacemakers so that it can also be inserted into the heart through a catheter.
