Fundamentals of Safe Life Activities (OBZhD)

Terrorism is the method by which an organized group or party seeks to achieve its stated goals through the systematic use of violence. To instill fear, terrorist acts such as explosions and arson of shops and railway stations are used; hostage-taking, aircraft hijacking, etc.

To prevent a possible terrorist act:

do not touch packages (bags, boxes, etc.) left unattended in a train car (metro), at the entrance of a house or on the street and do not let others near them;
report the find to a police officer;
try to remember the signs of suspicious people and report them to the arriving intelligence officers;
if an explosion occurs, take measures to prevent fire and panic, provide first aid to the victims.

Rules of conduct when a group of people is captured by terrorists:

In the presence of terrorists, do not express your displeasure, refrain from sudden movements, screaming and groans.

Obey the demands of the invaders without altercation.

Before you do anything (move, open a briefcase, etc.), ask the terrorists for permission.

Give the terrorists the personal items they demand.

Avoid rash actions, as if you fail, you can endanger your own safety and the safety of others.

Try to remain unnoticed, refrain from retaliatory actions and requests.

Do not react to provocative or defiant behavior of the invaders.

Sit or lie still without asking questions or making eye contact with the terrorists.

When threatened with the use of weapons by terrorists, lie on your stomach, protecting the back of your head with your palms. Stay away from windows, glass doors, walkways, stairs, elevators.

Do not panic, always remain attentive, ready to use the slightest opportunity to escape.

If you are injured, try not to make unnecessary movements, take a comfortable position and remain calm - any movement increases blood loss.

If you manage to portray a serious illness, it may be possible to free yourself as a result of negotiations.

Try to keep yourself busy: read, write, play or talk with your neighbors.

Together with other hostages, participate in shift monitoring of the terrorists' actions.

Try to understand the invaders' intentions by considering the possibility of personal resistance.

Try to determine the number of terrorists, where each of them is, what weapons they have.

Do not help the hostages to obtain additional information about the hostages (about the high social status of their parents, etc.).

When releasing hostages by the capture team, remain lying on the floor until the end of the operation, obey the orders of the counter-terrorism team. Do not rub your eyes if tear gas is applied. Do not leave the premises without orders. When released, exit as quickly as possible.

What to do if you get into a shootout

If the shooting caught you on the street, you should immediately lie down and look around. Choose the nearest cover and make your way to it without rising to your full height. Cover can be ledges of buildings, monuments, concrete pillars or curbs, ditches, etc. As soon as possible, hide in the entrance of an apartment building, underpass, etc., wait for the firefight to end in cover. Remember that a car is not the best protection for you, since the metal is thin and the fuel is explosive.

Take measures to save the children, if necessary, cover them with your body. If possible, report the incident to the police. If you are at home during the shootout, take cover in the bathroom and lie on the floor, as it is dangerous to be in the room due to the possibility of a ricochet. While in the shelter, make sure that the fire does not start. If the fire still started, but the shooting did not stop, then leave the apartment and take cover in the entrance, further from the windows.

Actions of those caught in a situation with the hijacking of an aircraft (bus)

If you find yourself in a hijacked plane (bus), do not attract the attention of terrorists. Inspect the interior, mark the places of possible shelter in case of shooting. Calm down, try to distract yourself from what is happening: read, solve crossword puzzles.

Remove jewelry. Do not make eye contact with terrorists, do not move around the cabin or open bags without their permission. Do not respond to provocative or challenging behavior. Women wearing miniskirts should cover their legs.

If the authorities attempt an assault, lie down on the floor between the chairs and stay there until the end of the assault. After liberation, leave the plane (bus) immediately, as the possibility of bombing the plane by terrorists, as well as an explosion of gasoline vapors, is not ruled out.

Running shoes change the physiology of running 04.07.2016

Running shoes do some of the work for the runner's foot, but they put more strain on her muscles. This conclusion was made by scientists from the University of Queensland (Australia) led by Dr. Luke Kelly.

Evolution has adapted the human body to run - but on the ground, not on hard surfaces like asphalt. To run on them, we added a springy layer between the foot and the surface - the sole of running shoes. Obviously, they change the physiology of running, but how exactly? Until now, evolutionary biologists believed that running shoes unloaded the muscles of the foot, making them weaker and "lazy". The purpose of Dr. Kelly's study with colleagues was precisely to test this hypothesis.

To do this, they set up a series of experiments on 16 volunteers who ran on a treadmill (simulator), in the fabric of which pressure sensors were inserted. Other microsensors implanted in people's feet analyzed the work of their muscles. Thus, the scientists received comprehensive detailed information, on the basis of which they built a theoretical model of what happens with a bare foot and with a foot in a sneaker, while running on a hard surface.

It turned out that sneakers do do some of the work for the runner's foot: in those situations where the arch of the bare foot is completely flattened, the arch of the foot shod in sneakers drops only by 75%. However, at the same time, sneakers increase the load on the muscles.

“When the ligaments and muscles stretch during the lowering of the arch of the foot, they store energy like a stretching rubber band. Less compression means less stored energy. So I think the evolutionary biologists are essentially right, only in fact, as we first showed , the load on the muscles increases, and not vice versa," said Dr. Kelly.
