Addiction begins with repeated drug use due to the desire to again and again experience the sensations caused by drug intoxication, while an addiction to the drug is formed, gradually suppressing and crowding out the person's normal drives. As the drug is used, the effect of the drug weakens, and the addict is forced to increase the dose of the narcotic substance in order to achieve the same effect. If at first the drug caused a relaxing, pacifying effect, now intoxication stimulates and restores efficiency. The life processes of such people proceed with the constant presence of the drug in the body, and the cessation of its use disrupts these processes.

Physical attraction is a signal of the need for a drug. If at the beginning of the disease the attraction to the drug was expressed by a disorder of mental functions (irritability, depressed mood, inability to concentrate, etc.), now signs of a physical condition disorder appear: sweating, palpitations, dry mouth, muscle weakness, trembling of the limbs, pallor, dilated pupils .

If the drug does not enter the body for more than a day, an abstinence syndrome develops - a painful condition accompanied by severe mental and physical disorders, in some cases life-threatening.

Against the background of an irresistible attraction, excitement, anxiety, anxiety, fear arise, often replaced by longing, thoughts of hopelessness. Depending on the substance used, convulsive seizures and acute psychosis with impaired consciousness, an influx of hallucinations, and delirium may occur during the withdrawal period.

Violated the functions of all body systems. Blood pressure rises, heart rate increases sharply. Muscles are tense, there are severe muscle pains, muscle tremors, twitches and cramps. The work of the digestive apparatus is disrupted: vomiting, diarrhea, pain in the stomach and along the intestines occur, there is no appetite, sleep is disturbed.

As the disease develops, the body becomes completely depleted, the tolerance to the drug decreases, the previous doses cause severe poisoning, so the patient consumes half the dose or even less, which evens out the condition somewhat, giving neither cheerfulness nor fun. Without the drug, the state of weakness is so strong that the patient may die. More often than not, medical care is ineffective.

Death threatens a drug addict not only in far-reaching cases - it lies in wait for him from the very first weeks of the disease. Patients die from an accidental overdose, from taking unknown substances, from introducing an infection into their body by injection.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Scientists Prove Nietzsche Right 06.10.2019

"Everything that does not kill me makes me stronger," is the statement of the German philosopher, often repeated now to the point and not very much, modern scientists have tried to verify. The subject of the study was the impact of early career failures of scientists on their subsequent scientific biography.

The researchers analyzed data from scientists who applied for R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) early in their careers. This was between 1990 and 2005. After reviewing the applications, the NIH made a decision to grant or deny the grant. To make a decision in this case, a formalized procedure is used, which provides for the assessment of the activities and plans of the applicant in points. The grant is received by those who scored the sum of points above the passing.

The authors were interested in two groups of scientists: those who received a score a little higher than the passing one and, accordingly, received a grant, and those who were a little short of the threshold. This approach made it possible to assume that the scientific level of the participants in both groups is approximately the same.

Having singled out these two groups, the authors examined the data on their scientific publications in the next ten years. The researchers were interested in the total number of published articles and the proportion of frequently cited "hits" among them.

It turned out that in the first five years, scientists who did not receive grants publish a little less articles, but then overtake their more successful colleagues. It is even more remarkable that the probability of writing a scientific "hit" - a highly cited article - is 6.1% higher for "losers".

According to the authors of the study, about 10% of the “losers” ended their scientific career after not receiving a grant, which means that the departure of weak members of the group could not have a significant impact on its results.
