The cheapest (Chinese-Polish) electronic ballasts work in autogenerator mode and are assembled from discrete elements. Hence the presence of several complex winding elements - transformers, large dimensions of printed circuit boards, low reliability, and complexity of settings.

Leading development companies produce a fairly wide range of ballast control chips. There are both microcircuits that require external power transistors, and modifications in which power switches are integrated into one package with a control circuit. Such ballasts are quite miniature.

More recently appeared a new generation of electronic ballast control chips, which has many service and protective functions. Unfortunately, domestic developments of electronic ballast control microcircuits are in their infancy; therefore, we have to talk only about how foreign manufacturers of power electronics have succeeded in this market.

International Rectifier (ww.irf.com) manufactures IR2156, IR2157, IR2159, IR2166, IR2167, IR2520 chips that require external power transistors, and IR5xHxx chips with integrated power switches.

STMicroelectronics (st.com) manufactures L6569, L6571, L6574 chips.

Motorola - MC2151, MPIC2151, MC33157DW.

Firm Unitrode (Texas Instilments) - UC3871, UC3872.

PHILIPS - UBA2014, UBA2021, UBA2024.

Microcircuits contain:

  • gate control circuit of the upper switching transistor with a voltage additive;
  • protection circuit against through currents (protective pause 1,2 μs);
  • nodes for stabilizing the internal power supply;
  • undervoltage protection circuit.

Additionally, new generation of chips MC33157DW, L6574, UBA2021, UBA2024, IR2157, IR2159, IR2166, IR2167, IR2520 implements:

  • the ability to set the heating time of the glowing electrodes;
  • the ability to set the ignition speed of the lamp due to the introduction of a floating driving frequency;
  • the ability to set a delay for turning on power switches;
  • additional protection against non-ignition of the lamp and the inclusion of a protective mode at the time of its failure;
  • protection in case of burnout of incandescent electrodes and control of the presence of an inserted lamp;
  • protection against ignition at a frequency below the resonant one;
  • protection against mains voltage drop;
  • automatic restart in case of short-term loss of mains voltage;
  • protection against overheating of the crystal.

We add that the IR2159 chip is dimmer - can adjust the brightness of the lamp (phase adjustment method).

Chips IR2166, IR2167 have a built-in power factor corrector.

Traffic noise delays the growth of chicks 06.05.2024

The sounds that surround us in modern cities are becoming increasingly piercing. However, few people think about how this noise affects the animal world, especially such delicate creatures as chicks that have not yet hatched from their eggs. Recent research is shedding light on this issue, indicating serious consequences for their development and survival. Scientists have found that exposure of zebra diamondback chicks to traffic noise can cause serious disruption to their development. Experiments have shown that noise pollution can significantly delay their hatching, and those chicks that do emerge face a number of health-promoting problems. The researchers also found that the negative effects of noise pollution extend into the adult birds. Reduced chances of reproduction and decreased fertility indicate the long-term effects that traffic noise has on wildlife. The study results highlight the need ... >>

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Fern against arsenic 02.01.2005

It was found that the pteris ribbon fern is able to purify water from arsenic.

Experiments conducted by American botanists showed that this plant extracts more than 98% of the arsenic contained in it per day, which makes the water suitable for drinking (according to WHO standards, arsenic content up to 0,01 milligrams per liter of water is considered harmless).

The discovery is especially relevant for some areas of India and Africa, where well water contains arsenic compounds.
