The city forms many aspects of human life. When evaluating degree of ecological comfort of the city we mean, in particular, the level of social well-being (family budgets, housing provision, use of the service sector, children's education, health status, quality of medical care and social security, etc.), the degree of environmental safety and legal protection, employment and satisfaction their work (the nature and scope of employment, relationships at work, transport or pedestrian accessibility of the place of work, etc.), conditions for proper rest and recuperation, the degree of completeness of information support, conditions for the continuity of cultural traditions, etc.

An important place among such characteristics belongs to the state of public health, which can be characterized both by sanitary and demographic parameters (life expectancy, total mortality, infant mortality, morbidity, disability, etc.), and by a number of functions determined by it. Each function below, their balance is determined by socially and historically developed eco-socio-cultural factors (the duration of cultural traditions, their mobility, the degree of adaptability to modern conditions, methods of general education and vocational training, the specifics of the development of components of creative work, etc.).

So to the number fundamental functions of public health can be attributed:

  • reproduction of subsequent generations;
  • concrete living labor carried out by people in various professionally specialized spheres of social production;
  • education and training of future generations.

These functions of the health of citizens to a high extent depend on the characteristics of the local eco-socio-cultural complex (or complexes) that has developed over a certain historical time and constitutes the anthropo-ecological system of the city. This, on the one hand, includes all areas of urban development that ensure the daily activities of the population (architectural ensembles, landscape gardening areas, residential areas, including their modern modifications), and on the other hand, objects determined by the requirements of the economy, politics and other essential needs. These are production, energy, communication, management and other systems that ensure the functioning of the city as a single megastructure.

A high (in some cases, "superdense") concentration of functions within these eco-socio-cultural complexes leads to negative impacts on public health, reduces the efficiency of these functions, having a negative impact on the reproduction function, especially in connection with the possible increase in environmental pollution, an increase in genetic defects, an increase in morbidity, the peculiarities of the functioning and stability of the institution of the family, etc. In addition, it interferes with the normal socialization of generations and destroys living labor.

For cities, the problem of a flexible combination of various types of anthropological microsystems (production, information, socio-cultural, landscape-architectural, etc.) is very important. It will be possible to concentrate material, energy, information flows for the fulfillment of major social goals, while at the same time carrying out their certain concentration necessary for the implementation of public health functions, only if health routes are created in cities, including a variety of recreational zones (from Latin recreatio - restoration ), corresponding to the geno- and phenotypic characteristics of certain groups of people.

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

Primium Seneca keyboard 05.05.2024

Keyboards are an integral part of our daily computer work. However, one of the main problems that users face is noise, especially in the case of premium models. But with the new Seneca keyboard from Norbauer & Co, that may change. Seneca is not just a keyboard, it is the result of five years of development work to create the ideal device. Every aspect of this keyboard, from acoustic properties to mechanical characteristics, has been carefully considered and balanced. One of the key features of Seneca is its silent stabilizers, which solve the noise problem common to many keyboards. In addition, the keyboard supports various key widths, making it convenient for any user. Although Seneca is not yet available for purchase, it is scheduled for release in late summer. Norbauer & Co's Seneca represents new standards in keyboard design. Her ... >>

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

energy from the ear 06.03.2021

Experts have discovered a new power source, which is convenient because it is always near you and never runs out of power. Moreover, you yourself are such a source of nutrition, or rather, your inner ear.

Scientists from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology were able to learn how to turn the cochlea of the inner ear of mammals into a source, albeit a small one, but still energy. The cochlea is a tube coiled and filled with liquid.

It is with its help that all mammals perceive sounds, and a small amount of energy is produced in it. For example, a guinea pig snail is capable of generating an electric current of up to 28 milliamps, and a voltage of 30 to 55 volts. In order to collect information about the electricity generated by the guinea pig's snail, experts designed a special chip measuring 9 by 11 millimeters.

This small device ran on the energy generated by the inner ear for 5 hours, transmitting all the necessary data to scientists at a frequency of 2,4 gigahertz. This technology could help scientists invent microscopic hearing aids or stapes prostheses that will be powered directly from the energy of the inner ear.

In the future, this can make a real breakthrough in the treatment of hearing diseases, and defeat deafness, from which more and more people suffer every year. True, so far, experts have not figured out how to implant electrodes into the cochlea safely for hearing. And until this problem can be dealt with, all work in this direction will not move beyond experiments on laboratory animals.
