The pages of the popular French children's magazine "Gene Anne" contain descriptions of two models of hang gliders designed by Jean-Paul Mouvier and Christian Neuville. Wing "Delta" - an isosceles triangle with a height equal to half the base. The keel has the shape of a triangle with angles of 90, 60 and 30°. Like most kites, the Delta wing consists of a skin, a frame, and a reel-winding line. The cover is made of thin and durable material, the frame is made of wooden slats. The hang glider is very light, so a small breath of wind is enough to launch it.

We give descriptions of two models of different sizes, having the same proportions. It should be noted that a large Delta flies better than a small one. So...

little delta

It needs the following materials and tools: a ruler, a pencil, scissors, pins, a thimble, strong threads, round nose pliers, a large nail, four slats Ø 8 mm: two 100 long, one 90 and one 76 cm long.

Structurally, the kite (Fig. 1) consists of two parts: a wing and a keel, which are cut out of thin synthetic fabric; for covering you will need a piece of fabric measuring 180x90 cm.

Production

1. Fold the fabric in half and secure with pins as shown in Figure 1A. It forms a square with a side of 90 cm. Draw a diagonal. Then, 4 cm above it (this is the seam allowance), mark a parallel line along which you cut the fabric.

Expand it and find the middle in the resulting large triangle. On both sides of the triangle, the fabric must be bent by 3 cm and stitched. From the rest of the fabric, open the keel with 2 cm allowances for the seams on the two smaller sides of the triangle; fold the fabric on these two sides by 1,5 cm.

2. To the top of the right angle of the keel, for reinforcement, sew a small triangle (Fig. 1B) from the same fabric - one of the ends of the string will be attached here.

3. To the middle of the wing in its lower part (Fig. 1B), sew the keel with two lines: first at a distance of 1-2 mm from the edge, then stepping back 2-3 mm from the first.

4. Cut out a strip 92 cm long and 4,5 cm wide (the fabric is folded 1 cm on both sides) and sew to the reverse side of the wing exactly in the middle - from the top to the base (Fig. 1D), the width of the finished strip should be 2,5 .XNUMX cm. For convenience, you can use the tape: it is easy to attach it without turning the edges. The strip forms a channel into which the center rail will be inserted. When sewing the strip, try not to touch the keel. Sew up one end of the channel, and leave the other open.

Assembly

1. Insert 1 m rails into the side channels and a 90 cm rail into the center channels of the wing. The side rails do not reach the top of the wing triangle. Sew up the ends of the channels.

2. Bend two hooks from steel wire Ø 1,5 mm (Fig. 2). Glue and thread them to the ends of the cross rail (76 cm long).

3. With a hot nail, burn two holes at points A and B and a hole C in the reinforced corner of the keel. By inserting the hooks at points A and B, secure the cross rail, this will give the Delta in flight the bend that is necessary to increase its stability.

big delta

You will need the following materials and tools: ruler, pencil, scissors, pins, thimble, strong thread, round nose pliers, pliers, large nail, vise, hacksaw, two clamps, wood glue, sandpaper, four slats of square section 15X15 mm: two slats 360 cm long, one (transverse) 430 cm, the other (central) 300 cm.

A large "Delta" (Fig. 1) is made in almost the same way as a small one.

For covering, you need a piece of fabric 11,3x1 m: 9 m - for the wing, 2,3 m - for the keel.

Production

1. Open the keel (see figure 1), leaving 2 cm for the seams on the two smaller sides of the triangle. Fold in the edges of the fabric. Sew a triangle to the top of the right angle of the keel for reinforcement.

2. Cut a piece of fabric 9 m long into three parts perpendicular to the shared thread. Then put them together so that you get a square with a side of 3 m (Fig. 1). Draw a diagonal and cut the fabric along it. Sew all the resulting pieces so that as a result an isosceles triangle is formed with a base of 6 m and a height of 3 m. On both sides, tuck the material by 6 cm (to insert side rails), and from the side of the base by 1 cm.

3. Sew the keel exactly in the middle of the large triangle (Fig. 1), and on the other side of the cut - a strip 7 cm wide (it forms a channel for the central rail).

Assembly

1. Insert the side and center rails and sew up the ends of the channels.

2. With a hot nail, pierce holes at points A and B of the wing and C of the keel.

3. Bend two hooks from steel wire Ø 2 mm (Fig. 2). Attach them to the ends of the cross rail and insert it.

Motoviltse (Fig. 3) is made of plywood 10 mm thick. Its dimensions are shown in the drawing. As a string, a nylon fishing line is used that can withstand a load of 20 kg.

To launch the Delta, you need to hold it by the towline. It takes one or two people to get started. In strong winds, the model may dive. To avoid this, you should increase the bend by lowering the crossbar (for this, two more holes are made below points A and B).

A New Way to Control and Manipulate Optical Signals 05.05.2024

The modern world of science and technology is developing rapidly, and every day new methods and technologies appear that open up new prospects for us in various fields. One such innovation is the development by German scientists of a new way to control optical signals, which could lead to significant progress in the field of photonics. Recent research has allowed German scientists to create a tunable waveplate inside a fused silica waveguide. This method, based on the use of a liquid crystal layer, allows one to effectively change the polarization of light passing through a waveguide. This technological breakthrough opens up new prospects for the development of compact and efficient photonic devices capable of processing large volumes of data. The electro-optical control of polarization provided by the new method could provide the basis for a new class of integrated photonic devices. This opens up great opportunities for ... >>

A young star is eating the planet 20.07.2018

Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology using the Chandra X-ray observatory managed to record for the first time how a young star swallows a planet.

For the past 100 years, astronomers from all over the world have been observing the unusual behavior of stars in the constellation Taurus-Auriga, which is located about 450 light-years from Earth. So, the light of some celestial bodies in this area fades once every 10 years, after which the star begins to shine again.

In the constellation Taurus-Auriga are "stellar nurseries", which are clusters of thousands of "born stars". It is worth noting that such celestial bodies are a mixture of astronomical collapse of gas and dust inside the molecular clouds surrounding the constellation. Physicists observed just one of these stars called RW Aur A.

The study revealed that there is more iron around RW Aur A than on the Moon. It is noteworthy that the presence of this material is uncharacteristic of young stars. In this regard, scientists concluded that the last eclipse of the star was associated with a collision with a baby planet, in the core of which there is a large amount of iron.

The eclipse of RW Aur A is also explained by a collision with another celestial body - then, as a result of the break of the baby planet, its remains became a dense cloud of gas and dust. Once such planetary debris hit a star, it created a thick veil that temporarily obscured the star's light.

"Computer simulations have long predicted that planets could merge with the structure of a young star, but we have never observed anything like this before. If our interpretation of the data is correct, this will be the first time we have directly observed a young star devouring a planet or planets." - the message says.
