The final processing of flat and curved parts with sandpaper is conveniently carried out using a simple holder.

The fixture consists of a base and a clamp. The base is sawn as a whole with a handle from a bar of hardwood measuring 20x40x300 mm. The end that forms the handle is rounded on all sides, the holder itself is only on the end. The clamps are two identical metal washers 3x30x40 mm with a hole in the center Ø 6 mm. The plates are fixed with an M6 screw and a wing nut. If the washers are steel, then it is better to weld or solder the screw to one of them.

Skin holder
Devices for curly grinding: 1 - base, 2 - a strip of sandpaper, 3 - a washer with a screw, 4 - a reciprocal washer, 5 - a lamb nut.

At the base, recesses for the clamp washers are selected with an indent from the working end by 170 mm, a through hole Ø 6,1 mm is drilled in them. A strip of skin 40x380 mm is cut off. One of its ends is placed under a washer with a screw, the strip is wrapped around the working end of the bar, and the second edge of the sandpaper is clamped with a reciprocal washer and nut. The device allows you to quickly replace the skin when moving from coarse to fine grinding, increases the service life of the abrasive material.

The world's tallest astronomical observatory opened 04.05.2024

Exploring space and its mysteries is a task that attracts the attention of astronomers from all over the world. In the fresh air of the high mountains, far from city light pollution, the stars and planets reveal their secrets with greater clarity. A new page is opening in the history of astronomy with the opening of the world's highest astronomical observatory - the Atacama Observatory of the University of Tokyo. The Atacama Observatory, located at an altitude of 5640 meters above sea level, opens up new opportunities for astronomers in the study of space. This site has become the highest location for a ground-based telescope, providing researchers with a unique tool for studying infrared waves in the Universe. Although the high altitude location provides clearer skies and less interference from the atmosphere, building an observatory on a high mountain poses enormous difficulties and challenges. However, despite the difficulties, the new observatory opens up broad research prospects for astronomers. ... >>

Controlling objects using air currents 04.05.2024

The development of robotics continues to open up new prospects for us in the field of automation and control of various objects. Recently, Finnish scientists presented an innovative approach to controlling humanoid robots using air currents. This method promises to revolutionize the way objects are manipulated and open new horizons in the field of robotics. The idea of controlling objects using air currents is not new, but until recently, implementing such concepts remained a challenge. Finnish researchers have developed an innovative method that allows robots to manipulate objects using special air jets as "air fingers". The air flow control algorithm, developed by a team of specialists, is based on a thorough study of the movement of objects in the air flow. The air jet control system, carried out using special motors, allows you to direct objects without resorting to physical ... >>

Purebred dogs get sick no more often than purebred dogs 03.05.2024

Caring for the health of our pets is an important aspect of the life of every dog owner. However, there is a common assumption that purebred dogs are more susceptible to diseases compared to mixed dogs. New research led by researchers at the Texas School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences brings new perspective to this question. A study conducted by the Dog Aging Project (DAP) of more than 27 companion dogs found that purebred and mixed dogs were generally equally likely to experience various diseases. Although some breeds may be more susceptible to certain diseases, the overall diagnosis rate is virtually the same between both groups. The Dog Aging Project's chief veterinarian, Dr. Keith Creevy, notes that there are several well-known diseases that are more common in certain breeds of dogs, which supports the notion that purebred dogs are more susceptible to disease. ... >>

Scientists know how to increase computer performance by 20% 17.02.2012

In a recent paper, NC State University researchers describe a way to achieve an average 21,4% increase in computer performance. We are talking about chips like AMD APU, that is, solutions that combine CPU and GPU on a single chip. This research was funded by the National Science Foundation and AMD. As a result, the article barely addresses the question of how the new approach can increase the performance of Intel chips, which also have integrated graphics.

Associate Professor Dr. Huihang Zhou notes that hybrid processors allow manufacturers to reduce production costs and increase energy efficiency, but so far, CPUs and GPUs have hardly overlapped and work on their own tasks. He adds that they rarely interact to execute any proposed program, so they're not as efficient as they could be, and that's the problem the researchers tried to solve.

"Our approach is for the GPU cores to perform the compute functions, and for the CPU cores to prefetch the data the GPU needs from main memory. This is more efficient as it allows the CPU and GPU to do what each does best. GPUs are good for doing calculations, and the CPU for decision making and flexible data retrieval," says Dr. Zhou.

In general, as you can see, we are talking about GPGPU computing, but the researchers note that before the integration of CPU and GPU cores on a single chip, their approach was not possible. Let's hope that AMD and its partners really start to use the power of accelerated processors more efficiently, applying the highly parallel power of graphics to a wider range of tasks.
While the technology is described only as a brief overview, the full report will be read on February 27 at the International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architectures in New Orleans.
