MODELING
Starting towing device. Tips for a modeler Directory / Radio control equipment The starting towing device (Fig. 1) is easy to make in any aircraft model mug. In the absence of a lathe, it can be made flat, which, however, will slightly increase its dimensions, but will not affect its performance.
The device works like this. Before starting, pull the rod out of the body, while the latch will come out of engagement with the locking bracket. Then put a railing ring on it and insert it into the slot of the lock bracket, where the latch will be held by a spring put on the stem and resting on its adjusting screw. The latch limits the upward movement of the stem. The spring preload is adjusted with a slotted screw. When the airframe is launched, under the action of the rail tension, the device on the suspension axle deviates forward and, through the stop to which the rudder rod is attached, puts the rudder in the neutral position. To perform the uncoupling of the model, it is necessary at the end of the tightening to disperse it on the turn or sharply pull the rail. This creates an additional load on the spring. The rod goes down, and the latch disengages from the bracket-lock, rotates on its axis and releases the rail ring. If, due to the inexperience of the athlete, an overload occurs during the start, the glider is automatically released from the rail, which prevents its breakage. Weakening and even sagging of the lifeline does not cause its premature dropping, since the ring is closed by a latch. Turn the body of the towing device on a lathe along with the future lock bracket. Clamp the blank eccentrically in the chuck of the machine and drill it to the diameter of the body glass, then to the thread of the adjusting screw, and finally turn and cut it. The wall thickness of the glass should be within 0,5 mm. Process the bracket using a locksmith's method to a thickness of 4-5 mm. In it, cut a groove for the latch and rivet the stop between its cheeks. From the bottom of the case, you need to cut the internal thread M5 or M6 for the adjusting screw. Make a rod from steel wire Ø 3-4 mm, at one end of which it is necessary to cut a thread for a lock nut, and on the other end, cut a groove and drill a hole for the latch axis. The latter can be cut out of sheet duralumin (D16T) or brass with a thickness of 1-1,5 mm. On the adjusting screw, drill a hole for the diameter of the rod, saw through the slot and cut it to a clear length - 6-7 mm. Select the spring so that for sports models the load at the end of compression is 2 kg, and for class A-1 models - about 1,5 kg. Use carbon steel wire Ø 0,5-0,6 mm as the material. The body of the towing device can also be made from a piece of brass tube of a suitable diameter. In this case, the locking bracket must be made from a strip of brass or thick sheet 0,5-0,6 mm thick, bent accordingly and soldered to the body. The "flat" version of the starting towing device is shown in Figure 2.
The spring is pressed when the latch is removed from the bracket by rotating the rod, which is screwed into the support nut. The body consists of two "cheeks" connected through gaskets on rivets. Make a support nut from a strip 2,5 mm thick, cut a thread in it that matches the thread of the stem. Other constructive and technological solutions are also possible, while maintaining the main idea - automatic reset of the handrail when the permissible load on the model is exceeded. The dimensions of the fixture may depend on the design and dimensions of the forward fuselage, the section and length of the spring, the rod and a number of other conditions. Although all this does not exclude the creation of a universal towing device suitable for both large and small models. This design of the towing device is now being finalized taking into account the requirements of a dynamic start. The complication will be very small. We hope that aircraft modelers will try to solve this problem on their own and share their experience on the pages of the magazine.
