SONY CMD-CD5

They brought me a box of medium size. Opening it, I found a fairly standard set: the device itself, battery, charger and instructions in Russian. Moreover, each item, neatly packed in a bag, lay in its own compartment, closed with a lid specially designed for it.

Outwardly, the phone did not make much impression on me: big, long, narrow - a copy of CMD-C1, only with an external antenna. Its dimensions according to the documentation are 139x45.5x25.5 mm. The weight of the phone is also not small - 139g. The device has a curved shape, thanks to which it lies well in the hand. However, it is not very convenient to use it, at least for people with a small hand (in particular, the majority of the female half of the population), since the wheel (Jog Dial) is located a little high.

Another serious problem with this model is the convex glass. If you wear your phone without a case, then after a couple of weeks a lot of small scratches will appear on the glass. Very disappointing: the feeling of novelty immediately disappears. Everything would be fine if it were not for the problem with the covers. For the sake of interest, having gone around a dozen stores, I did not find cases for CMD-CD5 in any of them.

I was pleased only with the color of the phone - dark blue metallic. This model is available in two more colors: black and metallic silver. The phone is made (unlike some older Sony models) of high-quality plastic, which will not begin to peel off a month after purchase.

The buttons also seemed convenient - large, located at such a distance from each other that there was no confusion and problems with pressing them. In the very bottom row there are slightly smaller buttons responsible for turning off the phone, switching modes and erasing characters.

The battery, as already mentioned, is a 1000 mAh lithium-ion battery. In standby mode, it can work up to 180 hours without recharging, in talk mode - up to 6. With intensive use, it lasts for two, maximum three days of work (without turning off for the night). A full charge takes an average of 2,5-3 hours.

Longer operating time (standby time up to 250 hours and up to 8 hours talk time) is provided by a 1600 mAh Li-Ion battery, which is no longer included in the standard package.

With the Sleep function, you can set the time for your phone to turn off. You can further increase battery life by turning off the backlight in the Settings menu.

The SIM card is in place, but what's next?

After inserting the SIM card, I securely fixed it with a plastic Sim holder and turned on the phone by pressing a special button in the lower right corner of the handset. An egg appeared on the screen, from which a cute ostrich hatched, then the Sony logo, and finally a welcome inscription. After a few seconds, the phone found the network. As you can see, it took a lot of time. Here it would be appropriate to add that the welcome inscription is easily edited, but in English.

In the end, the display showed the name of the network operator, signal strength (4 divisions), battery charge level (4 divisions), date and time. Later it turned out that the screen in standby mode does not always look the same: sometimes you have to choose between a vibrating alert and a date with time. . I needed a watch.

The display is graphic, high contrast. Compared to the phone itself, it looks very small, although it can display up to four lines of text of 16 characters each. The font size is easy to change. The backlight is soft, green, goes out slowly.

Menu

To get to the Menu, you must either press the "Menu" button or quickly rotate the Jog Dial. The highlighted items of the main menu are depicted using associative symbols. When you rotate the Jog Dial, they move in a circle like a carousel. Menu sub-items are simply listed in a column.

The phone is Russified. The translation of the titles is well done. However, some names consisting of more than one word are written together (without a space), after some abbreviations there is no dot, etc. Of course, you can read such headlines, but they look unpresentable.

Melody or call tones

The phone is pre-programmed with about 30 different melodies, which are selected using the "Ring tone" option. The melodies are ordinary, but the choice is large. Unfortunately, you can't record your own melodies.

The volume of the call is satisfactory, at least there were almost no calls missed due to "not heard". The SMS signal, on the contrary, turned out to be quiet and imperceptible, and there is no way to change it.

The device does have a vibrating alert, although it works quite mediocrely. If you wear a vibrating phone in a jacket, you are unlikely to know that someone called. Another interesting feature of this model is that you can turn on the vibrating alert only with the help of the button responsible for changing profiles - there is no such function in the menu.

The profiles provided in this phone are quite simple, when you switch them, only the volume and type of the call can change. A total of 6 modes are available: silent mode (with the ringer turned off), one ring, vibrating only, one ring and vibrating, vibrating and full ring, ordinary ring.

The phone also has a signal that sounds at the end of every minute of a call. Sometimes it helps to save money. You cannot change the amount of time after which this signal is heard.

Other functions

Additional functions of the phone include: a timer, an alarm clock, a calculator, a currency converter, a calendar in which nothing can be written down; a modem that transmits data at a speed of 9600 bps. There are no games, even the simplest ones.

The alarm clock can be programmed to work every day at a certain time or to remind you of a single event. The alarm sounds for 40 seconds and will wake you up even if the phone is turned off. A bell appears on the display at this moment.

The timer setting step is 1 second. The maximum time for which it can be set is 99 minutes 99 seconds. In another menu there is a timer that shows the total time of calls and the time of the last conversation (although it can be seen immediately after the conversation, without entering the menu).

The calculator and currency converter in this device are not the most convenient, it takes time to get used to them.

Your phone has features such as Any Key Answer and Auto Busy Redial. However, the phone does not perceive the "busy" signal, so the automatic redial does not work in practice.

Sensitivity and reception quality

The sensitivity of the phone turned out to be average, somewhere in the "three plus" or "four minus". In places with dubious reception, the phone did not perform well: there was either no signal at all, or it was so weak that the conversation was constantly cut off. Moreover, other phones (for example, Nokia 3210, 3310, Siemens C25, C35) in the same places provided quite acceptable communication quality.

Audibility was also far from ideal: extraneous noises, crackling, wheezing, sometimes there was an echo.

During a call, functions such as mute / unmute the microphone, increase the volume, show the talk time, enter a new number in the phone book, view other numbers, etc. are available.

phone book

In order to open the phone book, you just need to press the Jog Dial. After that, a list of the first 9 numbers on the SIM card will be displayed on the screen. You can view the extended version of the entries by scrolling the wheel up. It seemed to me not very convenient, because at the moment when the message "Notebook" appears on the screen I really want to enter this menu and select the desired number, and at the entrance it turns out that this is the section for editing entries in the book.

The phone book itself can store up to 100 numbers (not counting SIM card entries). At the same time, there is a function that allows you to copy entries from the SIM card to the phone and vice versa. Entries can only be entered in Latin. Searching for numbers is quite simple, as there is a search by the first letter.

In Sony СMD-CD5, it is possible to identify the subscriber's name entered in the phone book by the number during the call and by the call itself. However, we must immediately make a reservation that this phone model has problems with identifying numbers. So, Moscow phone numbers are determined only if they are preceded by the numbers 8-095 in the entry, and if the book got a number without codes (for example, 1234567, not 8-095-1234567), then identification will not work. The same story with direct Bee-Line numbers (only MTS was used during testing): they are all defined as federal, i.e. 8901******.

The phone remembers the last 10 outgoing and incoming calls (both received and not received) with time and date. Sometimes, however, there is confusion with missed calls. The fact is that the symbol indicating a missed call does not disappear after viewing the number, and if you do not pay attention to the time and date of the call, which must be watched specially, you can mistake the old missed call for a new one.

SMS messages

Working with SMS-messages has its pros and cons.

The advantages include the fact that the phone allows you to store in memory a lot of SMS-messages (up to 30 pieces) up to 160 characters long, while you can choose the memory class. It is possible to store them in the phone, on the SIM card, or you can simply display them on the screen. A reminder system is also handy, alerting you to how many free fields are left. If you are typing SMS in English, then the pluses include the T9 system, which makes it easier to enter text.

As for the minuses, I would first of all attribute the fact that it is impossible to read a new message on the move, for this you need to enter the menu. View it when the keyboard is locked, too, of course, impossible. The downside, in my opinion, is the lack of message templates.

In this way …

On the one hand, Sony CMD-CD5 has many features that are not always typical for phones of this class: vibrating alert, clock, alarm clock, calculator, currency converter, Li-Ion battery, auto redial, etc. But, unfortunately, not all of these features work as well as we would like. The vibrating alert is very soft, the clock is not always visible, the calculator and currency converter are inconvenient; in order for the subscriber identification by call and name to work, you must first redo three-quarters of the notebook; auto redial does not work at all; the signal of SMS messages is almost inaudible; It is not possible to instantly view a new received message. And besides, the design is not the most original and ergonomic, although this is already a matter of taste.

If we talk about personal impressions, then I got little pleasure using this device. Although, given the cost of the phone, you can turn a blind eye to many things: after all, you cannot demand a diamond in a gold frame for the price of a piece of glass. If you need an ordinary "dialer", then this is by no means the worst option.

eMMC flash modules 24.02.2015

Samsung has announced the release of embedded drives based on eMMC 5.1 flash memory. The manufacturer emphasizes that the specification was adopted quite recently, and he already has the first products in the industry that meet its requirements.

The line includes models with a capacity of 16, 32 and 64 GB. The drive of the maximum volume in sequential read mode shows speeds up to 250 MB / s, in sequential write mode - up to 125 MB / s. Performance values for random access operations reach 11 IOPS in the case of reading and 000 IOPS in the case of writing.

For comparison, we can recall the performance of 5.0 GB eMCC 64 modules released by Samsung in November 2012. Sequential read and write speeds are 260 and 50 MB/s, and random read and write performance is 5000 and 2000 IOPS. Progress, as they say, is visible to the naked eye.

Compliance with the eMMC 5.1 specification means support for command queuing, a feature first introduced in the eMMC standard, which is useful for multitasking and playing Ultra HD video. In addition, the modules support the Secure Write Protection feature, which restricts access to eMMC protected areas.
