The Japanese firms Sanio and Mitsui have developed a method for producing CDs based on a lactic acid polymer derived from corn.

The "corn" disc is in no way inferior to ordinary ones, but does not require non-renewable raw materials - oil - for the manufacture. In addition, after getting into a landfill, such a disc is relatively quickly decomposed by fungi and microbes. One disc takes 85 corn kernels.

Autonomous combat robot 28.08.2016

The Israeli army began patrolling the border with the Gaza Strip with the help of an autonomous observer robot Border Protector, created on the basis of a conventional SUV.

The robot car moves independently along a pre-laid route outside the asphalt, collecting video and other data about the terrain for reconnaissance purposes. The collected intelligence data can be transmitted in real time to other manned and unmanned vehicles.

The Border Protector is capable of avoiding obstacles on its own, but it also provides for the transition to telecontrol. The remote operator has the ability to "intercept the steering wheel" and change or refine the route.

The weapon systems deployed on the Border Protector are now controlled by the operator remotely, however, according to the publication, it is possible to transfer control over them to the artificial intelligence of the machine. The Border Protector is the world's first fully autonomous combat vehicle.

Successes in the development of civilian unmanned vehicles are widely known, but military systems have their own specifics. For example, such a vehicle should be able to move on the ground and rough terrain, correct the route, and in the future, assess military threats to itself. The control system used on the Border Protector can be adapted and transferred to any type of vehicle.

An Israeli officer said that a few years ago it seemed to them that autonomous robots would appear no earlier than in 20-30 years. However, they are already planning to supply autonomous systems to every major army unit. All autonomous robots will operate under the control of operators.
